This past week I was able to enjoy some vacation time with the family at the Walt Disney World resort. Happiest place on earth sure but it started and ended with some #situationalawareness and some “adventure”….
As we traveled from the airport to the resort in heavy rain at night by our bus driver Orlando (Mears Transportation Group), his defensive driving was on full display. His awareness of those around him and environment prevented a few accidents and kept us and the other vehicles safe. Not many noticed as most of the passengers were half asleep but I did…As he dropped us off I thanked Orlando and called out his superb driving. He answered, “I appreciate you noticing but I had some precious cargo and wanted to ensure everyone enjoyed their vacation”.
On the 2nd to last day of our trip, we noticed our youngest daughter was complaining of right lower quadrant pain…do we press on in order to enjoy Disney Hollywood Studios or trust our #spideysenses?? Our own assessment pointed to something more severe and as she jumped off the resort bus it was an obvious answer….off we went to the local Emergency Department to confirm…mom and dad were right…it was appendicitis!!
Both events required a level of situational awareness to understand the signs, the symptoms, and to take action when alerted of potential danger.
In healthcare we rely on clinicians and leaders to also possess situational awareness to provide the best care for our patients, ensure safe operations, and to pivot for optimal business decisions. What are we doing to remove distractions, white noise, false alerts, and promote questioning attitudes, sensitivity to variances and utilize alerts/data to make those timely actions?
One can grow their situational awareness but it’s a little easier when we eliminate, automate, delegate, and concentrate.
Eliminate the distractions and unnecessary steps/work.
Automate - optimize technology and implement smart alerts that are actionable and meaningful.
Delegate - ensure the right staff (experts) are working on the right things so they can do what they do best.
Concentrate - focus and intentionality by self and others while knowing and doing what is expected of us.
Note: My daughter is doing well today and fully recovered. We had a great time otherwise!

1moI wish so badly I could share video with sound as this little guy says, “Relax. Don’t stress. Take it easy.” I take the Centrion shield with me everywhere for work, from sharing it on every page of educational power points I build to wearing it on my T-shirt and on the lanyard that holds my ID card with statewide clearance to every institution in Florida (70 or so). However, I wanted to share that as a Nana of 7 (with an 8th one due any day), and with family vacations that include everyone from my parents to my grown sons to my grandchildren, even an actual beach vacation can be made better by a Centurion reminder for a left-brained/organized person like myself to actually RELAX! Love our company. 💙
