To better prepare for the future, we need to better prepare our children to cope with and integrate into today's convoluted and confused world. Schools are not currently doing that. One of my aspirations is to get Red Team Thinking® into education, to make critical thinking part of the national curriculum, and enable our children to develop and grow their natural curiosity... rather than see it quashed as the need to conform overrides the desire to challenge. This is not a sustainable path. We must enable and engage people, and especially our children, so they can get off the conformity conveyor belt, or, better still, don't get on it in the first place. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures cross-curriculum priority offers a crucial opportunity for our young people to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures, knowledge traditions, and holistic worldviews. It is imperative for educators to feel confident and supported when incorporating the cross-curricular priority into their teaching practice. Reflecting on my own childhood, I vividly recall the profound sense of shame I felt about my identity when I was in school because the history I was taught didn’t resonate with my own experiences and understanding of my people and culture. The way Aboriginal history and culture were presented was superficial and lacked the genuine depth needed for meaningful learning experiences. Unfortunately this still happens today and in a lot of cases, the CCP is completely left out and is not being incorporated at all. Failing to authentically embed this cross-curricular priority poses significant risks. Therefore, it's essential for teachers to feel empowered and supported in incorporating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures into their teaching practices. If you're a teacher or educator, I hope this episode on ‘Out of Field Teaching Toolkit’ offers valuable insights and equips you with the confidence to effectively incorporate the cross-curricular priority of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures into your teaching practice. It’s actually not as scary as you think!
Most K-12 teachers will feel out of field embedding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people's histories and cultures in their teaching. In my latest ep of the Out-of-Field Teaching Toolkit podcast, I talk to the AEU's Alex Leon, a Proud First Nations woman and high school teacher. She explains how to go about it without adding to the cultural load of your peers. Loads of useful links in the show notes to check out, too. https://lnkd.in/gWiw6Zta
