As I go through 22 years of training memories I've found quite a few photos where Participants - in this case with DHL Express - act out 'The Chicken Dance' - which comes from a story I share during any Operations training I conduct.
Because one of the keys to successfully running a Contact Centre, Customer Service function or Customer Experience group is to understand the impact of decisions across all Stakeholders.
Because decisions made will ripple across Customers, Employees and the Organization and being able to describe that succinctly and with as much 'accuracy' as possible is an important leadership behaviour.
The last time I taught the Chicken Dance was just a few weeks back in Hong Kong with Managers at Cathay Pacific - and I think what I'll do going forward is work to get a photo of all the Participants acting it out - just like these cool folks at DHL way back in around 2010.

Last month, I had the opportunity to shadow Marcus Zipper (CSIRO Manufacturing Business Unit Director) for 2 days. Equal parts inspiring and thought-provoking, this shadowing experience helped me capture some “real-life” portraits of notorious complexities and challenges that come with bringing key priorities into focus when so many elements are in frame and how senior leaders keep a wide lens view across multiple functions. It also provided a fuller picture of the context in which my role operates, and I began to see how some of my projects linked to the broader CSIRO strategy.
Here are my main takeaways from this experience:
-While senior leaders are not necessarily expected to specialise in all areas, they need to be fluent in the languages and processes across different domains (e.g., risk, legal, science & technology, HR, and operations).
-It was fascinating to see how different scenarios required a different leadership style and fine tuning between empathy and support with directness and constructive challenge.
-Having a good and supportive team of staff is critical – I witnessed firsthand how Marcus relied on his team's expertise and collaboration to navigate challenges effectively.
Besides all these, I am truly grateful that Marcus took the time to explain the topics or answer my questions before and after every meeting, introduce me to people we met during this time and show genuine care and interest to my work, opinions and perspectives around different topics. This career development opportunity has widened my perspective beyond the confines of my role, allowing me to glimpse into new horizons 💡 Thanks Marcus Zipper!

😊 I love to do that and I am really happy that we at #DHL even have a structured process for this which is called “LEADS” and stands for Leadership Evaluation, Achievements, Development and Succession.
🔊 And yes, it is this time of the year where you will hear people in DHL talk about #LEADS.
📅 November always marks an important month as it is self-evaluation time. Employees are asked to reflect on their key achievements, their leadership profile along our DHL Group #LeadershipAttributes, what they want to do next or if they want to remain in their current roles. They can express if they are mobile or would like to continue working in the location where they are based today.
📅 During December and in early January managers then provide their view on the leadership profile along our leadership attributes & an overall assessment. And they also share their perspective with the employee on potential future target roles and development opportunities.
💬 It might sound simple and basic but giving both the employee and the manager time to reflect on these elements and bringing it into a structured process has proven as a perfect foundation for really meaningful dialogues between the managers and the employees and to plan for the future. It also nicely feeds into the succession planning which is a separate phase during the year and which provides managers a great pipeline of candidates once roles become vacant.
👏 So all in all, LEADS aims to develop our people through a great feedback culture as LEADS brings together evaluation of past performance along with recommendations for future development perspectives and succession planning on an annual basis.
🏆 I am super proud to be part of the x-divisional working group who further enhances those processes year-over-year and we are excited that we got shortlisted for a DHL Group ✨HR Award.
