The 2024 SHARE Investor Summit held last week in Vancouver brought together 300+ representatives from Canadian asset owners and asset managers to learn about environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues, what investors can do to address them and how effective collaboration can bolster action. Here are five takeaways: 1. Proactively managing climate risks and opportunities is a fiduciary duty: the Climate Engagement Canada (CEC) Benchmark is useful research that investors can use to engage asset managers and portfolio companies 2. Indigenous economic reconciliation is an imperative: investors want to know that companies are building relationships with Indigenous communities, taking meaningful steps towards economic reconciliation and integrating Indigenous rights, title and interests into their policies, plans and operations (check out Pehta for inspiration) 3. Racial equity is coming into focus: investors are beginning to articulate expectations for asset managers and the companies they invest in on their racial equity efforts 4. Accountability for ESG is increasingly important in private equity: asset owners are formalizing their approaches to enhanced ESG due diligence with PE managers 5. Impact investment is gaining traction: asset owners are keen to contribute to positive social and environmental solutions; we expect impact investing to mature and expand accordingly Thank you SHARE—Shareholder Association for Research and Education for inviting Emily B. NEW: Foundations have a rich history of prioritizing impact in their resource allocation decisions for grant-making. With the rise of #impactinvesting among foundations, it's crucial for practitioners to grasp and compare the impact management approaches for grants (focused on monitoring, evaluation, and learning) versus investments (think impact measurement and management) in order to assess whether their interventions are achieving desired objectives. Our recent publication, created in collaboration with The Rockefeller Foundation, shines a spotlight on the Foundation’s Zero Gap Fund, an impact investing collaborative with the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Their Zero Gap Fund: State of the Portfolio annual report was assessed by BlueMark in 2021. This piece offers insight into impact measurement and management practices used by impact investors. It also discusses broader trends within the impact investment community, emphasizes the significance of independent verification and benchmarking, and highlights opportunities for mutual learning between impact measurement and management professionals and monitoring, evaluation, and learning experts.
