The world needs MORE COMMUNITY.
And I don't mean this fake, popularity-contest, #like4like, LinkedIn "community".
I mean genuine, "Why are you at my house at 6am?" community.
My students start out the year being so...lame.
They don't want to talk to people they don't know.
They're mad that I didn't group them with their friends.
So they shrink and hide behind their phones and their Chromebooks.
But they learn very quickly that they can't succeed in the kitchen without communication and teamwork.
So, they slowly connect.
Slowly shift away from their phones.
Slowly shift towards getting to know each other.
By second quarter, they'd rather stand around talking during downtime instead of rushing to their seats to be on their phones.
This is what community does.
It pulls us out from hiding behind screens.
It fills our tanks and uplifts our spirits.
It gives us encouragement, a helping hand, something to look forward to.
Online communities have their place, but they do not replace our innate desire to be *with* each other.
Maybe if we spent less time building online empires, and more time building communities that surround us, we'd be more satisfied in life.
