This week has been a great reminder of why emotional investing can be detrimental. The S&P 500 opened on Monday at 5151, down 195 points from Friday's close—a drop of 3.65%. Headlines screamed, "Over $1.4 trillion in market value wiped out from the S&P 500 today." You could panic, or you could stay patient because you're in it for the long haul. By Wednesday morning, the S&P 500 had climbed back to 5330, only 16 points below Friday's close. All that panic, only to see almost a full recovery in just a few days. If you sold on Monday morning, you would have missed out on a 3.6% rebound.

Charles Schwab Corp (NYSE:SCHW) earnings and revenues hit their mark for the first quarter as the investment platform provider welcomed growing amounts of new client assets as the macroeconomic backdrop improved. Net revenues in the quarter totalled $4.7 billion, down 7% on the same period a year earlier but 6% higher than the $4.46 billion in the fourth quarter of last year and in line with Wall Street forecasts. However, net new client assets grew $96 billion and strong equity markets helped total client assets reach a record $9.12 trillion. Net income of $1.4 billion was down 15% on the first quarter last year on a GAAP basis or $0.68 diluted earnings per share. Adjusted EPS of $0.74 was bang in line with Street expectations. “Against an improved macroeconomic backdrop, clients entrusted us with $96 billion in core net new assets – including $45 billion in March alone,” said co-chairman and CEO Walt... Over the next four weeks, the vast majority of publicly traded companies will update shareholders on business conditions in Q1. It's called "earnings season," and it happens four times a year. So buckle up, because it's relatively likely that you'll read about one company's success, followed by news of another's missteps, more than once in the coming weeks. In the table below, you can see the next month of company reports. On a busy day, more than 400 companies will check in with their numbers. On slow days, typically Mondays and Fridays, you can expect to hear from fewer.1 What's A Popular Topic to Hear About? Updates on inflation and artificial intelligence have been the most popular topics. In Q3 2023, “AI” was said nearly 150 times. In Q4 of that same year, the term “inflation” was mentioned at least once during the quarterly calls of over 250 S&P 500 companies. Either could be popular again this quarter.2,3 So far this earnings season, several large banks in the S&P 500 have posted results and their focus has been on the Fed and interest rates. Of course, you would expect banks to talk about interest rates, whereas it may not be as important to a tech company, for example.4 It’s best to prepare for some market volatility as Wall Street starts to collect info about the 2024 business climate. At the same time with the CrowdStrike outage many trading systems were down. So that day my trade order out of the money market alternative took 8+ hours to fill (after market close). Charles Schwab needs to just get with the program have better base money market rates. .5% interest is just not going to fly with the savvy investors that make up the Schwab base.

#Earnings season is kicking off, which means you’ll soon see a lot of headlines reporting whether specific companies “beat” or “miss” analysts’ expectations. You'll also read a lot about analysts revising their forecasts. But keep in mind these types of developments have as much to do with analysts’ forecasting abilities as a company’s ability to perform.
