An incident at a church about an hour from my house that was totally avoidable and de-escalateable, but now a church safety security volunteer is facing a felony charge. Time and time again I see good people volunteering at church and meaning well, end up doing and saying things that escalate situations, sometimes with tragic results. Great job of observing possible suspicious activity in the church parking lot, and making contact to investigate. In this case, a tow truck had pulled into the lot to check on a possible repo. I think the repo driver was wrong to return later with a partner, driving at high speed through the lot to the vehicle in question, but the response by the church safety security volunteers went off the rails when one of them pulled a gun and pointed it at the repo guys, telling them he was willing to shoot them. He is now facing felony assault charges because in Michigan you can not just go around pointing guns at people when you can not articulate there was imminent danger of great bodily harm or death to anyone. Folks, do NOT risk life or limb over property!!! Slow down, take a breath, and assess the situation: Is there imminent danger of great bodily harm or death? No, so there no need for guns to be drawn and pointed at anyone. Did anyone ask to see legal paperwork authorizing an impound and repo? Repo drivers should have offered to show papers if they are legit. A few years ago here in the west Michigan area there was a crew going around stealing cars by posing as repo impound drivers. When and if you see some activity in the parking lot during service and you need to check it out, keep in mind you do not have to make contact within arms reach. You can call out to people from 30 feet away and near other vehicles that will offer cover and concealment if things go off the rails badly. In this case, ask to see paperwork, and KNOW THE LAW. Here in Michigan, a repossession is allowed to take place on private property, so these church volunteers were interfering with people doing their job. The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Sarah K. Elfreth (D-Anne Arundel), would impose a tax on firearms, firearms accessories and ammunition to fund the state’s Trauma Physicians Services Fund, which helps cover costs for medical care by trauma physicians, for Medicaid-enrolled patients and other trauma related on-call and standby expenses. The fund currently gets about $12 million a year, primarily through a motor vehicle registration fee. With the proposed excise tax, about 44% of the gun and ammunition tax proceeds would be distributed to the trauma physicians’ fund. Another 23% would be dispersed to the state’s Violence Intervention and Prevention program, which directs money toward violence prevention efforts, specifically gun violence. The remaining portion would be divided this way: 29% to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center at the University of Maryland Medical System; 2% to the survivors of homicide victims grant program with the Governor’s Office of Crime and Prevention Policy; and 2% to the proposed Center for Firearm Violence Prevention and Intervention, which would operate within the state Department of Health. Will someone please tell Biden and his Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy that stupidity is the actual true “public health crisis” plaguing this administration in particular and the progressive, far left, anti 2A, anti US Constitution, socialist “D” party, in general. What’s going unsaid is that there IS just one problem: The Numbers. “Buried in the Newsweek article, which quoted Giffords stating it has long “advocated for a public health approach to gun violence,” was this observation:” “The 10 states with the strongest gun laws, in ranking order, were California, New Jersey, Connecticut, Illinois, New York, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Maryland and Colorado…” And these states, and they aren’t the only ones, and their large progressive “D” lead crime riddled cities within them, ALSO have some of the highest violent crime and overall crime rates in the entire country. Committed by criminals using guns already heavily restricted and nearly outlawed by those states. Criminals cause crime. The criminals ARE the public health emergency they’ve been looking for, and apparently, by their actions, encouraging, to higher and higher levels to create the (false) perception that “guns” are the problem. Thank you Sean Burke for posting about this incredibly timely and important topic. You don't have to have been in the school safety space for a very long time to know that school related violence has been on a steady rise. I think that while everyone should agree that preventative measures are perhaps the most important tool it is also the most difficult to develop let alone employ. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result and outcome. Having been immersed in this space for the last few years, we are always looking for ways to "disrupt" the industry. Attributing legal culpability to parents and now school personnel is perhaps the most drastic and dramatic disruption to date in terms of finding a proactive way to address school violence and active shooter threats to campuses and our children. At least for the time being, parents and school administrators are on notice that complacency doesn't only kill it now creates liability. Watch how quickly the ripple effect impacts the space and industry.

We decided to tackle gun violence against youth in Minneapolis, and the State of Minnesota, in a collaborative effort involving Change Starts With Community, this has led to the creation of the Youth Group Violence Intervention (YGVI) program. In partnership with the City of Minneapolis Neighborhood Safety Department and Hennepin County, DOC, Safe Communities, and Hennepin County Attorneys Office with local law enforcement agencies. This initiative is pioneering a unique approach using a "2 Gen approach" to tackle the issue at a national level. Launched as a pilot in Minneapolis and Hennepin County, the focus is on preventing further fatalities and retaliation among youth entrenched in groups, offering them an alternative to the cycle of violence. The overarching goal is to ensure these young individuals remain "Safe, Alive, and Free." Change Starts With Community facilitates this initiative, providing enriching experiences such as nutritional education and career-focused field trips supported by the Cargill Foundation. Additionally, the program offers agricultural exposure and stipend jobs for economic exposure with additional partners. Remarkably, in the inaugural year, "YGVI" achieved a noteworthy accomplishment with a zero percent death rate and zero recidivism rate among the youth participants.
