In this week’s Employee Spotlight, we get to know Scott McAllister, National Recruitment Director. When asked about his role, he said: "My role is all encompassing, I predominantly spend my time speaking with firm principals about the status of their business and ambitions for the future. This helps me understand what they might not be getting from their current network and how we might be able help them at PRIMIS 🦁. There’re some great networks out there, but often people are simply in the wrong one for them. I also help our existing members grow through all things recruitment, so that involves coaching businesses through onboarding, business planning and, in particular managing change. I love spending time with advisers looking to start up their very first business and speaking to people who are looking to join our industry, becoming advisers for the first time! I like being responsible for engineering positive change and helping individuals with: • Understanding how to become an adviser • Navigating academy roles • Help them achieve to CAS • Starting up new businesses • Moving large firms across I love being the person that delivers change and, hopefully, takes the fear out of it. Being a northerner, I also enjoy talking to different people every day. I love getting to know them personally and often find that relaxed conversations put me in a better position to help them. I have a 9-year-old daughter and recently another little baby girl 👶 born in January, so spare time isn’t really a thing anymore! But if I did have spare time, apart from treating the kids to some extortionately priced theme park or soft play, I’m a bit of a movie buff. I also love being out in nature 🌲, put me on a ski slope or in walking boots on a cliff top or forest and I’m happy man." Scott's quick-fire questions: 🗣️ Introvert or extrovert? What separates top-performers from average performers? It's more than pay, title, and authority. Top-performers have better relationships and more exposure. With better relationships, top-performers have more influence and work on higher value projects. With more exposure, people see and are aware of their contributions. You can’t hide behind the keyboard and expect to be a top-performer. Better relationships > more exposure > better projects > more impact All this leads to more of everything you want in your career. Great post Elena Verna! I completely agree that our job titles often play a significant role in how we are perceived by others. It's unfortunate that people sometimes dismiss others based solely on their job title, without considering the skills, expertise, and potential they may possess. I also appreciate your point about the pursuit of external recognition and validation leading to superficial achievements and a linear career progression. It's important for individuals to prioritize continuous learning and personal growth rather than just chasing higher titles. Additionally, I believe that finding fulfillment in our careers goes beyond the job title itself. It's about aligning our work with our values, passions, and aspirations. Sometimes, what may seem like a dream job from the outside may not necessarily bring happiness or satisfaction to an individual. I look forward to reading your blog post on how to separate one's identity from their job title. It sounds like it will offer valuable insights on finding meaning and fulfillment in our careers. Founders and senior leaders - do you understand the difference between Employer Brand and Talent Brand? If you do, then you'll understand why Glassdoor is still relevant to humans you want to attract, engage and hire for your startup or scale-up. I ran a poll and 51% of respondents think Glassdoor is still valuable - see below - and this is relevant because this relates to your company Talent Brand. For those that need a recap, your company Talent Brand is the social version of your employer brand – the perception talent has about the organisation, what they say and share about your company as a place of employment. Your Talent Brand is organic and you can only influence it. That's a key thing to remember, "you can only influence it", through engagement, transparency, and owning both positive and negative feedback. Think of your Talent Brand as a "friend or former colleague" who will provide feedback about their experiences of your company, what would you want them to say in conversation, in a social post, or on a feedback platform (such as Glassdoor). Additionally, individuals (applicants/candidates) are 4 x more likely to apply, engage or have a conversation with a Founder or senior leader who is hiring, if they read positive feedback or are referred by a friend or former colleague. Notice anything different? Let me explain. I was not calm this past weekend. I was in panic mode. I launched my Square Peg Consulting website and thought it would be fun to Google my business name and see what pulled up. Eighteen other consulting businesses with the same or similar name. 18! And that was just on page 1 of the search results. My website was nowhere to be seen on page 1 and as I looked deeper into these other businesses, I realized at least five of them could be considered HR. And while none of them are focused on small business or offer my services, it's not exactly great news for someone trying to get the word out about their business while create name & brand recognition. Then add in the "oh crap, will I get a cease & desist letter in the mail from one of these businesses?" and it was a really awesome 36 hours. Thankfully I have an amazing husband who is the calm to my chaos. He wisely told me, "Ok, so you made a mistake. Fix it and move on." So in true Ross Geller fashion, I pivoted my heart out and Square Peg Consulting is now DevelopHR Consulting. After lots of heart searching (and LOTS of Google searches) on name ideas, DevelopHR feels right (also helps that it pops up as #1 when you search the name on Google). As I have been scrambling to update everything, it occurred to me that my previous business name was born out of a place where I always felt like I didn't fit in my career, and sometimes even life. The proverbial square peg in a round hole. A perceived weakness in myself that I have always felt. But this name comes from a place of strength. My top strength according to StrengthsFinder®, is Developer. My passion for human resources has a lot to do with my passion for developing others; helping them to see their worth and achieve their goals. As I close out year one of business, I am proud of how I have grown personally & professionally.
