All of these Psychologists have certainly made important contributions. But using citation metrics to rank "Top" scientists ignores the many other ways that scientists contribute to or harm scientific progress. As we've recently seen in various fraud and questionnable research practice investigations in the behavioral sciences, some scientists may look astounding on a limited number of dimensions such as citations or publications, but pollute the scientific literature with unreliable research or as toxic mentors and colleagues. By focusing on individual achievements, such metrics incentivize scientists to do whatever is best for their careers, regardless of what is best for science. We need to move towards a system when scientists are rewarded or punished for their entire range of contributions to science, not just their individual achievements. When employees reach 20 years of service, they have certainly reached a special milestone. With twenty years of service comes ‘veteran’ status. They have seen the peaks and the troughs. They are the colleagues who know how things get done: they are mentor-material. Those with twenty-five years of service have reached the quarter century – a real milestone in anyone’s career. It’s a good moment to pause and celebrate previous successes and what they have learned. It is important to help these awardees to reflect and to remember. Again, they will have much-stored knowledge, which they will want to pass on. Recognition at work for work achievements is not often expected but is crucial to the success of the business and the team.

This was a great panel event. Honest accounts of the highs and lows of juggling parenting with career progression, as well as tips to manage day-to-day. Key takeaways for me included: 🕵️Get to know your team - don't assume that just because someone is a parent that their circumstances will be the same as other parents in your team. 👨🏾🍼Parent out loud - being honest (and sometimes vulnerable) about your responsibilities at home can help you feel you can be yourself at work. Spending less energy on hiding what's happening in your personal life can help you to focus more on working efficiently and effectively. 🎯 Flexibility and empathy is key - lead with empathy and compassion to get the best out of people. Look after your people and your people will smash their goals/targets. It's great to know that our senior leaders are human and that they're willing to be brave and share their experiences so that the rest of us can benefit.
