The 12th Annual Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation's Conference: International Consensus on Research Priorities is scheduled for April 9-11, 2025, in Salt Lake City. It is a unique opportunity for patients and caregivers to sit side-by-side with experts in the field and provide their voices in helping focus research priorities. The upcoming Conference is an effort between CCF’s International Cholangiocarcinoma Research Network (ICRN) and the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST)-Action: BTC Precision Network, part of the European Network for the Study of Cholangiocarcinoma. The initiative brings together patients, caregivers, advocates, oncologists, researchers, industry, young investigators, regulators, and other specialists worldwide to review scientific evidence, share insights, and reach a consensus, or full agreement, on the research focus going forward to optimize existing funding and attract new funding. The Institute of Biomedical Science commissioned Oxera to assess the economic impact of the activities of Biomedical Scientists, with particular emphasis on their contributions within the bowel cancer patient pathway in England. As Health and Care Professions Council registrant professionals, Biomedical Scientists play a key role within the healthcare system. Our analysis solely focuses on bowel cancer patient pathway and found that Biomedical Scientists, especially in the initial testing stage, bring significant benefits, saving between £115-£571 million annually. This showcases just a fraction of their value, considering that around 95% of clinical pathways rely on Biomedical Scientists. Gen X Faces Higher Cancer Rates Than Any Previous Generation Researchers are investigating changes in cancer risks among young people as new data predict that rising rates of leading cancers, such as colon cancer, will overtake improvements A major new study projects that members of Generation X—people born between 1965 and 1980—have a higher rate of developing cancer than their parents and grandparents. And researchers are struggling to identify the reasons why cases are rising. Could it be related to changing diets or exercise habits? Are cancers themselves evolving to be wilier and more pernicious? The new research offers some possible clues. The model study, published in JAMA Network Open, sifted through cancer surveillance data collected between 1992 and 2018 on 3.8 million people in the U.S. Researchers looked for patterns in invasive cancer cases—those that have spread beyond the original site—within and among Generation X, Baby Boomers (people born in 1946–1964), the Silent Generation (1928–1945) and the Greatest Generation (1908–1927). The findings suggest that medical advances against some cancers—gained by better screening, prevention and treatment—have been overtaken by startling increases in other cancers, including colon, rectal, thyroid, ovarian and prostate cancers. This troubling trend has researchers baffled and scrambling for answers. “It’s really something that has been observed in multiple studies, and now I think it really is an undeniable fact that we’re seeing cancer rise in younger people,” says Andrew Chan, a gastroenterologist at Massachusetts General Hospital and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, who was not involved in the new research. “The study really reinforced what we already know but also provided us some additional insights into the trends within particular cancer sites and more detail on the rates of increase within individual groups.”

After an extensive international call for proposals, nearly $1 million has been awarded to two outstanding researchers: 🔬 Dr. Andrew Goldberg of Oakland University, for his project on "Natural History and AAV-Mediated Interventions for Dominant Negative and Haploinsufficient Mouse Models of PRPH2-Associated Disease." 🔬 Dr. Yoshikazu Imanishi of Indiana University, for his project on "Elucidating Pathophysiological Mechanisms and Advancing High-Throughput Drug Discovery in PRPH2-Related Retinal Dystrophies." These grants represent a significant investment in cutting-edge research aimed at understanding and treating PRPH2-related retinal diseases. We are excited about the potential breakthroughs these projects could bring, which promise to restore vision and improve the quality of life for individuals affected by these conditions.
