It’s official: I’m now the Vice President of Brand at BetterUp. I’m honored by this recognition and by the trust that my company has placed in me. In this expanded role, I will continue to build a category defining brand that brings human transformation to more people through a combination of world-class creative, content, partnerships, PR, and brand marketing experiences. I’m grateful for the ongoing mentorship and coaching I’ve received from many leaders at BetterUp. I was recently promoted to the most challenging job I'll ever have — a mom. Long story short, work travel looks different these days. And I'm incredibly grateful for Milk Stork, a brand that eases the load on getting breast milk where it needs to go (and for my company BetterUp for covering the costs as part of our company travel policy). I traveled back to back weeks domestically and internationally and Milk Stork had me covered. 🍼 👶 🛫 🇬🇧 Additionally, I wanted to share gratitude for the new community I've joined of working parents who lead with empathy and share their tips and tricks as I navigate my new normal. It's time for all of us to bet on young women, and especially young women of color. For me, McKinsey & Company's annual Women in the Workplace report is always a time for celebration of how far women have come and reflection on how much more work there is to do. This year I'm reflecting on the need to address the gender disparity in early promotions. Men significantly outnumber women by holding 60% of manager level positions. As a result, there are fewer women to promote to senior managers and so on with the number of women decreasing at every subsequent level. It's alarming to see the dip in progress for early-career Black women. "After rising in 2020 and 2021 to a high of 96 Black women promoted for every 100 men—likely because of heightened focus across corporate America—Black women’s promotion rates have fallen to 2018 levels, with only 54 Black women promoted for every 100 men this year." Decades of studies show female leaders boost collaboration, increase productivity, and inspire organizational dedication. What are we waiting for? It was Robin Arzón who taught me that hustle is a combination of grit and purpose. Grit is wasted effort without purpose. I've spent my career working at high performance companies, but BetterUp caught my attention because of its belief in the intersection of purpose and performance. BetterUp believes building a company and culture where people flourish is not at odds with a highly performant culture and company. Rather, they are one side of the same coin — an interconnected journey. Earlier this month we hosted #Uplift2023, our annual summit where we brought a community of senior leaders together to celebrate this belief, learn from one another, and co-elevate our craft, impact, and legacy. Uplift was another great example of how our brand marketing team continues to amaze me for their individual and collective imagination, passion, grit, and craftspersonship. We had the privilege of hosting Robin Arzón and Issa Rae for an inspiring conversation on how transformation starts from within. These powerhouse women shared how they transformed their careers, disrupted the status quo, and blazed new trails within their industries. Almost a month later and I'm still energized by their conversation. As a former lawyer, 27x marathon runner, entrepreneur, and mom, Robin leads by example when she inspires people (including me) to bet on themselves. #purpose #performance #transformation
