Should biomass have a use before it is used as a fuel? 🤔 It is an interesting question to consider whether or not we should burn primary biomass (wood, straw etc straight from the forest or field) or whether we should only burn biomass that has been used and is then destined for landfill (considered a waste material).#biomass For example instead of burning straw, straw could be made into things like packaging, tableware, insulation etc and at the end of the product life the straw product could be shredded and then used as biofuel. This way the straw is displacing the use of synthetic material (plastics, styrenes etc) and so is directly displacing harmful emissions, and at the end of its life it is also displacing the use of fossil fuels (carbon negative). Only using 'waste' biomass would remove the debate about parties simply cutting down whole trees to make biofuel. If there was a requirement to use primary biomass as a product then parties could not simply cut down the forests for fuel, instead they would have to prove that the primary biomass was usefully used before it could be classed as a fuel (what you are using for fuel is a byproduct or an actual product made from biomass). Today in the UK we throw away around 6m tonnes of biodegradable waste every year (biomass). This would be sufficient to generate around 4TWh of electricity or 12TWh of heat every year (sufficient energy to heat 1m homes). So was Dr Seuss right when scripting the Lorax! Does someone need to speak for the trees? Should it be the case that trees should never be cut down just to make them into fuel? 🤔

Will biomass solve all our sustainability problems? Maybe not all, but it is hard to imagine transitioning long-distance flights, shipping, heavy transport, as well as textiles, materials, and chemicals without biomass and bioenergy. To do this sustainably however, we need the right toolbox of technologies to convert agricultural, forestry, and industrial waste streams into higher-value products. Over the last two days, I had the pleasure of getting inspired by (and hopefully also inspiring) many of the great players in the industry at the 2nd Annual Advanced Biofuels Forum in Amsterdam. After over a decade in the industry, it's great to see advanced biofuels adoption picking up. Biogas is being rolled out at unprecedented speeds, cellulosic ethanol is advancing, and progress in gasification, pyrolysis, and hydrothermal liquefaction technologies shows we are close to having the toolbox needed to utilize biomass in a green society. The current financial environment presents challenges for closing business cases. However, it's encouraging to see first movers taking the leap regardless. I'm particularly excited by how biofuel technologies are getting creative, supplementing biofuels with high-value products from biomass. This not only makes projects more bankable but also supplies other essential materials for the green transition. Overall, we seem to be at the beginning of an “s-curve” adoption for advanced biofuels. Focus should be on making the always difficult first projects bankable, and once precedence has been set, I suspect we will see a much faster roll-out of the technologies. Can we put bio-oil back underground and make a meaningful contribution to the fight against climate change? Every year roughly 100 billion tons of CO2 gets removed from the atmosphere via photosynthesis. However, a lot of it goes back to the atmosphere when the biomass decays or burns. We need effective ways to prevent this carbon (captured for free by nature) from going back into the atmosphere. Let's delve into how Charm Industrial is innovating in this space. They are utilizing biomass waste — agricultural residues mainly corn stover and forest residue. This approach leverages nature's capability to capture carbon for free. They claim that the biomass they are using is not destined for other energy purposes, ensuring additional carbon removal. They collect agricultural residues post-harvest and utilize fast pyrolysis, a process of heating biomass in an oxygen-free environment. This converts the biomass into bio-oil, a carbon-rich liquid, and biochar. The bio-oil is then transported to well sites for underground injection, where it solidifies, effectively locking away carbon for thousands of years. While Charm's approach is promising, several concerns need addressing: ➊ Competing Demands and Additionality: As the demand for agricultural residues increases for various purposes, maintaining a steady supply for carbon removal could be challenging. They need to ensure that the carbon removal is additional. ➋ Scalability: Transporting biomass and bio-oil between farms and wells poses logistical challenges. ➌ Safety and Sustainability: The use of salt caverns and injection wells for storage has historical precedents of leaks, and it's essential to ensure that bio-oil can be safely and permanently sequestered. ➍ Net Carbon Benefit: Accounting for the true net carbon removal from the process, including emissions from pyrolysis and transportation, is crucial. Charm's method presents a novel way to utilize agricultural waste for long-term carbon sequestration. It's a promising approach, especially considering the vast amounts of biomass waste produced annually. What do you think about using biomass waste for carbon removal? The Protocol details how BCCS can be monitored, reported on and verified so that buyers can purchase BCCS carbon credits with confidence. Isometric’s BCCS Protocol provides the most detailed, robust requirements on the market for how suppliers should sustainably source biomass. This can give buyers of biomass-based carbon dioxide removal credits confidence that all biomass used in the BCCS process does not contribute to deforestation or changes to land use that would create further emissions. Arbor is the first supplier signed on to have credits issued against this protocol. Arbor uses technology that produces low cost and scalable bioenergy that also captures and locks away carbon dioxide for thousands of years. This Protocol was created by Isometric’s in-house Science Team and now enters a peer review process with more than 200 climate experts in Isometric’s independent Science Network. This brings the total number of published Isometric protocols to six and is another step towards building trust and transparency in carbon markets.

This side event will shed light on the interlinkages between nature-based solutions for climate and biodiversity and circular economy, with a special focus on the potential of cascading biomass use for climate action. It will address current policies and climate reporting guidelines affecting biomass use and the implications for the implementation of Nature-based Solutions. The availability of biomass is limited and competition for biogenic resources is intensifying, not at least due to the demand for energy. Exceeding the sustainably available potential of biomass leads to the degradation of ecosystems, additional greenhouse gas emissions, and limited potential for Nature-based Solutions.
