One of the many resources within this center is the Searchable Clearinghouse of Wastewater Technology (SCOWT). SCOWT is an information-sharing platform that provides resources on the cost-effectiveness and performance of innovative, alternative, and reuse wastewater technologies. You will learn about SCOWT’s functionality and see a demonstration. Biosolids Program Summary: As excess sewage sludge accumulates in wastewater treatment lagoons over time, their functionality and effectiveness are reduced. Excess accumulated sludge requires periodic removal to maintain full functioning capacity of the wastewater treatment process within the lagoon. Back in February 2024, the EPA published Understanding Lagoon Requirements Under 40 C.F.R. Part 503: Best Management Practices for Use or Disposal of Sewage Sludge, Part 1 – Land Application of Sewage Sludge Removed from Lagoons. EPA will review this guidance that provides wastewater operators with best management practices for complying with the Clean Water Act and the biosolids regulation when land applying sewage sludge that has been removed from lagoon treatment systems.
