Most of the world’s oceans remain unexplored but thanks to Australian innovation, these mysteries are now within reach. Advanced Navigation's underwater drone Hydrus, a game-changer in robotic technology, has uncovered a century-old shipwreck off Rottnest Island. This high-tech exploration slashes costs by 75%, opening a new chapter in maritime discovery. Peter Baker, Subsea Product Manager at Advanced Navigation said by drastically lowering the cost of underwater expeditions with Hydrus they can go out four times a year instead of once. "There's a lot of challenges facing the ocean today and what we need to do collectively is, have more information to make some better data driven decisions around that. 🟡Ocean services provider DeepOcean and Aker BP ASA have successfully completed subsea trials with an Autonomous Inspection Drone (AID) at the Aker BP operated Alvheim field in the central North Sea according to a press release of 16 January 2024.🟡 “While testing of autonomous technology is exciting on its own, our primary purpose was to find out if subsea inspection can be conducted more cost-efficiently and with better and more precise data quality with this new technology and associated methods. The conclusion is definitely ‘yes’. The development of the AID is an R&D project that is likely to deliver significant value to Aker BP in the coming years,” says Jarle Marius Solland, Operations Manager at Aker BP. The AID project is a strategic partnership between DeepOcean, Argus Remote Systems AS and Vaarst where a system has been developed with industry guidance, support, and funding from Aker BP ASA BP to bring a platform to market. We are constructing 2.5 kilometres of new inland shipping and deep-sea quays, which will have a depth of max. 20 metres. Part of the project involves surveying and inspecting the underwater works. Normally this is done with the use of divers, but now a handheld ROV drone is being deployed for the first time to take underwater images. 📸 The remotely operated underwater drone, a kind of underwater robot, features a high-resolution 4K camera and sonar technology. The sonar measurements are converted into images, making it possible for everyone within the project to understand what is happening underwater. Even in turbid water we can safely and efficiently map, for example, quay walls and the soil. This means a reliable inspection can be done in all kinds of conditions. 🔍 The ROV drone can be used for various works and inspections. In Amaliahaven, we are visualising our dredging activities along the quays thanks to the ROV drone. After a three-year hiatus, Underwater Intervention (UI) is back, attracting a global audience to the International WorkBoat Show in New Orleans. Aidan Thorn, business development manager of marine robotics at Sonardyne International Ltd, provided an update on what it has meant to see multiple unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) launched from the E/V Nautilus. The Ocean Exploration Cooperative Institute (OECI) hosted the Multivehicle Exploration expedition with the concept of operating three platforms together, one USV and two AUVs. The University of New Hampshire's USV DriX, the University of Rhode Island’s Deep Autonomous Profile (DAP), and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Mesobot were all the coordinated underwater tools on the 18-day mission. DriX, DAP, and Mesobot were able to explore the entire water column, beginning on the seafloor around the Geologists Seamounts south of the Main Hawaiian Islands. Deploying a single UUV from a ship can be time-consuming and expensive, and it limits the amount of data that can be collected. Even where multiUUVs can be accommodated, typically only one is deployed at a time due to the complexity. As unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) become more advanced, they can be used as "remote shepherds" to control UUVs.
