🇳🇱 Building on our outstanding research, QuTech’s economic impact in the Netherlands, and particularly in Delft, is becoming increasingly visible. It is not only evident from our research collaborations with globally operating technology giants but also from our rapidly expanding ecosystem of quantum companies. This ecosystem encompasses start-ups and scale-ups in quantum computing and quantum networking, as well as international companies that join the House of Quantum to establish a Dutch or European presence in proximity to the quantum talent that is concentrated in Delft. 🤝 The companies within the Delft ecosystem are transforming laboratory discoveries into tangible real-world applications, extending the quantum domain to involve an increasing number of people and disciplines. As the ecosystem has expanded, these enterprises and our collaborative research have become an integral part of our joint efforts to advance quantum technology. European Quantum Science, Policy and Industry gets together in a hall ..... The European Quantum Technology Conference #EQTC meets for the first time in-person since the pandemic and it is the first that Alice & Bob attends. The conference showcases all main #scientific and #technology pillars of the Quantum Flagship and the European ecosystem. It is a very interesting event. At the same time, it is: * a scientific conference with detailed technological developments (more on it later) * stakeholder event with high-level officials explaining governmental and agency strategies (Oscar Diez & Gustav Kalbe (European Commission ), Mattia Giardini (European Quantum Industry Consortium (QuIC) )) *a company showcase full of innovative companies and top-notch research institutes ( Nicu Becherescu (Qruise), Jelena Trbovic (QuantrolOx), Benjamin Frisch (CERN), Jaikishen 'Jay' (Qblox)) It is a real coalition of the willing. And that's because, for the quantum computer to happen, we need a lot of things: 1) innovation in the entire value chain: we must dream big ! interconnected cryostats, microwave-to-optics conversion, nothing is too wild 2) financial support: especially for companies that are focusing on FTQC (Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computing) and where commercial revenues are not straightforward nor short-term. The valley of death is wide and deep 3) Blue sky research: a bit similar to point 1 but even beyond. We need new crazy ideas, with greater technological rupture potential, things we don't even imagine today it's fun to be part of this strong, unique ecosystem. The road is long, we'll do our best to making it enjoyable.

Some Europeans believe that Europe has lagged in several key technology waves such as the Internet, AI, 5G and others. They are determined not to repeat this in quantum technology. The EU has issued a declaration on quantum technologies. It outlines a comprehensive strategy for advancing quantum technology across Europe, emphasizing its strategic importance for the EU's scientific and industrial competitiveness. Here are the key points: Strategic Importance and Ambition: The declaration recognizes quantum technologies as crucial for the EU's competitiveness and sovereignty, aiming to establish Europe as the leading global region for quantum excellence and innovation, termed the 'quantum valley'. Fields of Application: Quantum computing, simulation, communication, sensing, and metrology are identified as fields with transformative potential across various sectors, including computing, secure communication, energy, healthcare, manufacturing, security, and space. Economic and Strategic Value: Quantum technologies are highlighted as a priority within the European Economic Security Strategy, with significant investments already committed by the EU and Member States exceeding EUR 8 billion since 2018. Previous Initiatives: The document references past EU initiatives, such as the Quantum Technologies Flagship and the EuroQCI initiative, aiming for Europe to have its first computer with quantum acceleration by 2025 and leading quantum capabilities by 2030. Collective Ambitions and Challenges: It underlines the collective ambition and excellence in quantum research within the EU, acknowledging the competitive global landscape and the need for Europe to mobilize its innovators and industry to maintain a leading position. Aim and Activities for Collaboration: The declaration sets forth an aim for collaborative efforts to create a globally competitive quantum ecosystem in Europe, with activities ranging from aligning R&D programs, accelerating marketable quantum innovations, supporting quantum competence clusters, developing quantum infrastructures, boosting innovation and investments, identifying necessary skills and training, and understanding the societal impact of quantum technologies. Framework for Collaboration: It suggests establishing a collaboration framework, potentially advised by top-level science and industry representatives, to implement the declaration's activities. Open Invitation and Next Steps: The document invites all EU Member States to join and sign the declaration, with a commitment to develop a plan of action for its implementation, setting concrete targets aligned with the Digital Decade strategy. 🌐 Key Takeaways from the Copenhagen Quantum 2023 Conference 🚀 Last week, I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Copenhagen Quantum 2023 conference, a visionary event organized by the Danish government in collaboration with NATO. The conference aimed to explore cutting-edge solutions and foster collaboration in the field of quantum technologies. 🤝 On the conference we discussed several key points on how to collaborate to advance quantum technologies, long-term investments, industry partnerships, foster start-ups, commercialization practices, building a community, and the role of governments. 💡It was very interesting to see how all of us working in quantum computing share a common view on the importance of private-public collaboration, innovation funds availability to jointly advance technology adoption as well as the applicability of Quantum Computing Chemistry for SDG goals is key, making sustainable materials and removing harmful chemicals. 🔬 The Copenhagen Quantum 2023 conference proved to be a remarkable gathering of minds, sparking new ideas and collaborations that will shape the future of quantum technologies. Together, as a global community, we have the opportunity to revolutionize industries, solve grand challenges, and make a positive impact on the world. A Quantum Advocate’s Takeaways From the 3rd Annual Commercialising Quantum Global 2024, organised by The Economist, on June 5-6 in London, UK. This event catered to a diverse audience including bankers, lawyers, students, and doctors. It focused on the progress made by Western nations, especially the US, UK, and Western Europe, in advancing quantum technologies towards practical and commercial applications. 1. Mission-Driven Commercialisation Western nations are committed to commercialising quantum technologies within the next decade, focusing on engineering and application development. Example - #PsiQuantum 2. Areas of Focus The conference emphasized photonics, quantum sensing, atomic clocks, quantum communication, and networking as critical areas plus multidisciplinary efforts in preparing for quantum technologies' widespread adoption. 3. Integration with Existing Technologies Quantum solutions will need to integrate with existing technologies, similar to how analog systems coexist with digital solutions today. 4. Governmental Role and Ecosystem Development Governments are fostering ecosystems linking academia, business, and startups through national quantum missions. These ecosystems are essential for interdisciplinary collaborations, addressing skills shortages, and preparing for quantum technologies' deployment. Former Israeli PM Naftali Bennett's advice on allowing a thousand flowers to bloom while focusing on key areas was notable, along with his concept of radical generosity. 5. Security and Geopolitical Sensitivities National security's dependence on quantum technologies was a major theme, with discussions on cyber and quantum cybersecurity, technology leadership, and the geopolitical sensitivities of international collaborations. The NATO DIANA program and initiatives from Denmark, Austria, and Germany were mentioned. 6. Sector-Specific Engagement Sectors like defence, financial services, and healthcare are heavily engaged, with businesses and consultants preparing for the quantum era. 7. #PatientCapital and Public-Private Partnerships The evolving patient capital ecosystem, involving government, academia, and private investors, supports long-term quantum technology developments. Example - Novo Nordisk Foundation and other venture capital. 8. Use Cases Across Sectors Quantum technologies are set to revolutionize sectors such as healthcare (drug discovery and personalized medicine) and financial services (insurance & fraud detection), climate change solutions, etc As a passionate advocate for all things quantum, this conference was fantastic and aligned perfectly with my interests. Twenty one EU Member States have now joined the European efforts to make Europe the “quantum valley” of the world by signing the #Europeandeclaration on #quantumtechnologies during a conference organised yesterday (the 22nd March) by the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU. Through the declaration, first launched in December, the EU Member States that have signed so far recognise the importance of quantum technologies for the scientific and industrial competitiveness of the EU. The U.S. and Germany sign a joint statement on Cooperation in Quantum Information Science and Technology... If AI freaks you out, just wait until quantum rolls around. This new agreement strives to ensure: 1. Cooperation via shared principles, including openness, transparency, honesty, equity, fair competition, objectivity, protection and enforcement of intellectual property, and democratic values. 2, Commit to create inclusive scientific research communities and tackle cross-cutting issues of common interest such as equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. 3. Collaborate to identify overlapping interests and opportunities for future scientific cooperation. 4. Encourage a broad and inclusive QIST research and development (R&D) ecosystem to facilitate multidisciplinary research, and the sharing of research methodologies, infrastructure, and data. 5. Foster shared prosperity by building a trusted global market and supply chain for QIST R&D, and supporting its growth, by engaging stakeholders including industry consortia, research leaders, policy makers, and research security stakeholders to grow the future QIST R&D marketplace based on shared engagement principles. 6. Open and encourage opportunities for QIST collaborations across QIST R&D and its value chain. 7. Support the development of the next generation of scientists and engineers necessary to expand the field. 8.
