Trying to prove a point here really. Our contemporary architecture and buildings are not created from a new sensibility that has been fabricated in the last 50 years. They come from looking at what is old and has lasted and what has worked well for hundreds (and thousands) of years. It is then evolved to meet the new challenges of today. This is Fountains Abbey in Yorkshire from 1132. It has a pretty interesting scattered window arrangement with pure circles and arches and a fairly loose approach to symmetry. These are carefully located to ensure they work well to provide the internal spaces with the light and ventilation they need. This is the 1st of 60 incredible British buildings you will see here. Modern Side Extension is a homely and uncompromisingly modern answer to the question of how to extend a terraced home. Its success proves that even the smallest architectural projects can be transformational. Our sensitive but clever response for a terraced home retrofit uses conservation area-friendly brick, glass and bifold doors to unite a new complex three-dimensional composition. The materials are warm and non-ostentatious. The bi-fold doors and frameless rooflight glazing dissolves the distinction between inside and out and allow light deep into the property. We have avoided both the typical glass side infill solution and the intrusive projecting rear extension by reversing the infill condition. Built from contextually apt London Stock brick, this essentially involves a structural solution that allows the existing volume of the house to slip past a brick pier; a continuation of the party wall. The composition is a subtle game of solid and void, breaking down the threshold between new and old, inside and outside.

Where do I begin? In isolation, this is indeed an attractive tower design. What the issue is here however, possibly even more than the way that way that it impacts the heritage-listed Parcels Post Building at Sydney’s historic Central Station (which should be obvious), is the way that indigenous and built heritage has been used to justify this 45 storey proposal.
