Connecticut Department of Public Health and the CT Public Health Fellowship Program have supported 68 fellows in internship placements across the state of Connecticut. These students are gaining hands on experience and important core public health competencies. In addition, they have collectively completed 154 courses on TRAIN Connecticut from Public Health Foundation. On this past Friday, I completed my seven week internship with University of Michigan - Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy. I had the opportunity to share my research in my final presentation amongst my peers, mentors, doctoral students, Univeristy of Michigan falculty, and professionals. My research project was about anazlying mother’s participation in MIHP(Maternal and Infant Health Program) by their demographics which I used age and marital status at the time of birth. The Maternal and Infant Health Program is a home visting program for mother’s and their newborn babies. The goal of this program is to reduce infant mortality rates by promoting healthy pregnancies and healthy infant growth and development. The program serves over 15,000 mothers and over 20,000 babies annually. Through my research, I wanted to learn how marital status and age of the mother affected their participation in this program and how many home visits they had. I did my research in Stata from administrative data recorded by hospital records, Medicaid claims, and home visting records and also looked at survey data that was provided by the program. Once completed with my research, I created a PowerPoint that I presented to show my results. I am so grateful to have had this life changing opportunity this summer at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research’s Youth Policy Lab ASPIRE (Applied Social Policy Internship and Research Experience) Program and for being able to be in the inaugural cohort of this research experience. Industry can and should play a crucial role in supporting public education through advocacy. Leveraging its influence, resources, and expertise, it can help improve education. Businesses can collaborate with educational institutions by partnering with K-12 schools, colleges, and universities to create programs that bridge the gap between education and industry needs. Public education has never been properly funded. It benefits industry to increase education funding at local, state, and federal levels. Elsy Cruz Parra, a Richfield High School graduate, is considering a career as a doctor. Musab Mohamed, a Maple Grove High School graduate, discovered that he loves radiology. Sydney Rupert, a rising senior at Minnetonka High School, got a jump-start on her plans to become a surgeon. What do all these kids have in common? They're all students of color. And they all participated in the Hennepin Healthcare Talent Garden summer internship program. The program is on a mission to get more people of color into the healthcare talent pipeline. Why? Research shows that a diverse medical workforce leads to better health outcomes for people of color—from top level employees to entry-level workers across all touch points of care. While more people of color have been enrolling in medical school in recent years, the majority of active U.S. physicians identify as white. But the challenge of diversifying medical schools extends beyond recruiting students; it involves mentorship and institutional support. The Hennepin Healthcare Talent Garden is an example of how local initiatives can drive healthcare hiring and retention solutions from the onset and take steps towards bridging racial disparities in healthcare through early exposure and hands-on learning. How else can we shape a more diverse and equitable future medical workforce?

Check out their topic below: Chronic absenteeism has become a significant issue in Rhode Island, with 28,653 students (20% of public school students) marked as chronically absent for the 2023-2024 school year. Within Rhode Island, chronic absenteeism can result in loss of funding, lower standardized test scores, and increased costs to combat this issue. To address this issue, we aim to develop a multifaceted approach that tackles the root causes of chronic absenteeism. This policy proposal explores various dimensions contributing to absenteeism, including socioeconomic factors, transportation, safety concerns, and physiological and medical needs. By providing the necessary support to students and removing blockages to school attendance, RI youth will then earn their education and become part of the workforce in our state, boosting our overall economy and state health. To appropriately address the issue of chronic absenteeism in our state, it is imperative to look at the many facets that affect this demographic of students.
