The US and its allies are engaged in a global strategic competition with China and Russia. The primary theaters for this contest are Europe and the Indo-Pacific, but China and Russia also are increasing their malign influence in the Global South, including Latin America and the Caribbean. Unfortunately, the US approach to the region has been marked by strategic errors, including a problematic lack of attention and inadequate efforts to use all tools of national power to compete with China and Russia. https://lnkd.in/d8E7_xMz

⚾ Don't miss this webinar tomorrow! (July 3rd, 2024): The Stockholm Taiwan Center invites you to a discussion on "Beyond the Game: Taiwan’s Soft Power Through Sports Diplomacy": 🌐 Under China’s pressure, Taiwan has struggled to gain international space through a formal diplomatic approach. Therefore, sports diplomacy and soft power have become an alternative avenue for Taiwan to strengthen its global profile. Because of its unique situation caused by China’s ‘One China principle,’ Taiwan has participated in the Olympic Games and other international sports competitions under the name of ‘Chinese Taipei’ since 1981. 🥅 This issue is not only related to Taiwan’s international space but also linked to Taiwanese identity. The upcoming Paris 2024 Olympics offers a global stage for countries to advertise themselves through sports. 💡 What is the future of Taiwan’s sports diplomacy and what do international sporting events mean for Taiwanese identity? Register here to find out more: https://lnkd.in/dEMjSS8B Speakers: Po Chun Liu, Taiwan Sport Forward Association, and Tao-Tien (Ömür) Hsiung, National Chengchi University, National Taiwan Normal University. My latest op-ed with The Japan Times on the recent #Trilateral Summit b/w #Japan #SouthKorea #China It as a great meal but little on the table in terms of real cooperation 'Going forward, the trilateral meeting will become less significant as the national interests of Seoul and Tokyo diverge from Beijing. The ball is ultimately in Beijing’s court. If China continues its efforts to rewrite the international order based on the rule of law, which is crucial for middle-sized states like Japan and South Korea to prosper and remain secure, Beijing will further push Tokyo, Seoul and other like-minded governments and political entities like in Taipei toward forming a balancing coalition to contain China’s rise." https://lnkd.in/gQ4pDdNP

A new charm offensive? Unpacking Xi’s visit to Europe AtlanticCouncil 3 May 2024 The European Union describes China as a three-part “partner for cooperation, an economic competitor and a systemic rival.” Now, growing concerns in Europe over strategic dependencies on China’s, the vulnerability to economic coercion, and ties to Russia have sparked debate in Europe over the future of Europe’s relationship with Beijing. Suspicion over Chinese efforts to flood the European market with cheap exports have further caused Brussels to open investigations into China’s economic practices. At the same time, Beijing has stepped up its diplomatic efforts with Europe. President Xi Jinping will have talks in Paris, Belgrade, and Budapest on May 5-10, and Xi recently hosted German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte in China for discussions on their respective relationships with China. Meanwhile, the United States is pushing greater coordination with Europe on a transatlantic approach to China. All the while, elections in Europe and the United States add another layer of uncertainty for Europe’s and the United States’ future relations with China. Ahead of the upcoming European elections and the new European Commission mandate, what will be the future of the EU’s China strategy be amidst increased great power competition and implications for transatlantic relations? Is the EU doing enough to bolster its economic security and information integrity?
