Every year people around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). The event serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. Without blood donors I wouldn't be alive today. A blood service that gives patients access to safe blood and blood products in sufficient quantity is a key component of an effective health system.Just one blood donation could save, or improve, up to three lives. In low-income countries, up to 54% of blood transfusions are given to children under 5 years of age. In high-income countries, the largest patient group is 60+ years of age, accounting for 76% of all transfusions. 118.5 million units of blood are donated every year. June 14 is World Blood Donor Day. It is a global day to raise awareness that blood donations are a life-saving gift and are essential for patients who need blood transfusions. This day also marks the birthday of Karl Landsteiner, who discovered the ABO blood group system and was awarded the Nobel Prize.   The World Health Organization (WHO) has set the theme for this year as “20 years of celebrating giving: Thank you blood donors!” The WHO as well as partners and communities worldwide thank blood donors and praise their incredible contributions to saving patients’ lives over the years.   However, the number of people donating blood has decreased following the COVID-19 pandemic, and currently there is a chronic shortage of blood. In this environment, the WHO has listed the following as things we can do on World Blood Donor Day (excerpts): ・Voluntarily donate blood and inspire others to do the same. ・Encourage your friends and family to become regular blood donors. ・Find out your blood type and register as a blood donor. ・Participate in World Blood Donor Day through social networks.   The WHO states that “blood is the most precious gift” and that safe blood saves lives. A meaningful way to start the week - by donating blood. In the UK, the need for blood is constant and urgent. I read a statistic that the NHS needs over 1.4 million units of blood, just to meet the basic requirements of patients across the country and over 25% of us will need a blood donation at least once in our lives. Today, I added my 475ml… of blood. It was painless and very easy. Even better, the blood donor centre set up a temporary station in a hotel only a 10-minute walk away from me, so it was super easy. In case you need a little more convincing… One donation can save or improve up to three lives.The whole process takes just about an hour - from the questionnaire to your tea and biscuit at the end, and only 8 min of giving blood. You can do it in your lunch hour!! Yet - only a small percentage of the UK population are currently blood donors. If you can, donate blood.
