The Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) is providing a total of $8.75 million to three Ottawa-based life sciences companies. The funding includes $1.5 million investment to Virica Biotech Inc., to support and scale new advanced manufacturing of its viral sensitizers at its expanded facility at Carleton University. Virica Biotech pioneered a new viral sensitizer that boosts the efficacy of using viruses to help treat cancer, removing the barriers to manufacturing effective viral medicines at scale. FedDev Ontario also is providing $1.75 million to Genvira Biosciences Inc., which builds innovative biotherapeutics, examining how human cells change and mutate to help create vaccines, supporting advancements in gene therapy and cancer immunotherapy. The funding will help the company enhance its biomaterials manufacturing capabilities, to better serve clinicians as they undertake clinical trials. FedDev Ontario’s third investment is $5.5 million in Capital Bioventures, a not-for-profit wet-lab accelerator that provides Canadian biotech companies with early-stage funding and access to dedicated drug and corporate development biotech professionals, and access to high-quality equipment and lab space. 【KBIC Company Topic】 Celaid has raised 1.2 billion yen in its Series A financing round to advance HSC-based cell and gene therapies and platform Celaid Therapeutics (Celaid), a Japan-based biotech developing Hematopoietic Stem Cell (HSC) therapies, today announced that it has raised an additional 460 million yen in its Series A extension round. This round was led by The University of Tokyo Edge Capital Partners (UTEC) and OSAKA University Venture Capital (OUVC) with participation from Techno Science and Joyo Capital Partners. This brings Celaid’s total raise to approximately 1.2 billion yen which includes existing Series A funding of 500 million yen and the recent 200 million yen from the NEDO Deep Tech Startup grant. So I’m talking with a biotech executive, and he uses a Taylor Swift lyric to make a point. #Biotechnology companies often employ analogies to explain complex science, but a song about heartbreak was a first — and it went completely over my head. What I did get out of the discussion was an understanding of the unfolding partnering strategy for Ascidian Therapeutics, a #startup that edits #RNA rather than DNA to treat inherited disorders. Ascidian’s first alliance is with Roche, which is leveraging the young company’s platform technology to discover and develop novel RNA-editing medicines. Roche is paying $42 million up front and committing to $1.8 billion in milestone payments. Specific targets are undisclosed, but there’s nothing about the heart. These are all #neuroscience targets in what marks the latest in a string of neuro-focused RNA deals for the Swiss pharma giant. FWIW, I’ve read and reread the song lyrics and I still don’t get it. I guess for me, Taylor Swift is more complex than genetic medicines.
