Building the go-to place for all things mental health 💜

Last weekend I had the opportunity to share my observations of the mental health landscape in Singapore at a panel discussion organised by Young PAP (YP). I learnt about the latest initiatives in the community and public sector from my fellow panelists, Senior Minister of State Janil who is also leading the new Mental Health group within the PAP, and Ming Xiu Cho, Founder of Campus PSY. Meanwhile, Talk Your Heart Out (TYHO) 💜 Therapist Glenn and I shared our perspectives from the private sector. I called for the following in my presentation: ⚖️ More Regulation - Currently, counsellors and psychologists (unlike doctors, nurses, and physios) are not registered and regulated in Singapore. In the long run, regulation will improve the quality of services being provided, and build public trust in the effectiveness of non-medical interventions like therapy. The Council for Estate Agencies and the Early Childhood Development Agency established in the last decade or so to clean up the real estate and childcare sectors respectively are good examples to follow. 🩺 Less Medicalisation - Mental health is a spectrum with illnesses and disorders being only one end of it. We must treat all mental health concerns as legitimate that require the appropriate level of support. It doesn't have to get worse before it gets better! 🚪Better Access - Therapy can be expensive given the rigorous training and ongoing supervision and upskilling therapists undertake. Insurance providers, employers, and the government can all play a part to ensure everyone gets the support they need. Thanks for the invitation to the session, Kenneth!
