During my 11 months at Alaska Airlines as a ramp agent, I started the job knowing very little about airplanes beyond takeoff and landing. I've come to appreciate that what seemed like a daunting job is manageable with the right mindset. Humor, teamwork, and creativity—while always prioritizing safety—have been crucial. Here are three key lessons I've learned: Firstly, first impressions are vital. Building rapport from the outset with fellow ramp agents can make all the difference. A simple smile can foster a welcoming atmosphere that enhances teamwork and camaraderie. Secondly, a strong work ethic is non-negotiable. Maintaining a positive mindset ensures not only personal success but also sets a high standard that benefits the entire team. It's about being reliable and striving for excellence every day. Lastly, maintaining positive relationships is essential. Instead of reacting impulsively in challenging moments, showing grace and gratitude fosters respect and long-term cooperation among colleagues. These lessons have shaped my approach to work and enriched my experience at Alaska Airlines . I'm grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow in such a dynamic environment.

Story time! Today, I am going to dwell on my past and share a story of rejection which taught me 3 important life lessons. After my 12th, I enrolled into an aviation course to pursue a career as a cabin crew. Little did I know that it would be an array of rejections. For reasons unknown I didn't get through any airline I interviewed for. It hampered my self-confidence and how! Simply because I was judged on the basis of my height, weight and skin texture. I am sure airline crew is responsible for much more than just look pretty. Nevertheless, those rejections taught me 3 things that are etched in my memory. 1. You are not defined by that one moment of rejection. 2. Every 'no' brings you closer to the right 'yes' 3. Focus only on what you can control. What did your rejections teach you?

Yesterday was, supposedly, World Pilot Day (not sure who determines it's existence never mind the date it is celebrated) and World Flight Attendant Day is 31 May. Why is the airline industry so obsessed with singling out specific groups when the whole system is reliant upon all the cogs in it? Believe me, pilots and flight attendants don't function well when the scheduling team produce lousy rosters and the payroll team forget to pay salaries and allowances. And, from a safety point of view engineers, loaders, fuellers etc can all have significant impact in flight safety. World Airline Day celebrating the whole of the industry makes better sense (7 December is International Civil Aviation Day), if there is any sense whatsoever in "celebration days". The 'enforced' acknowledgement of specific groups, professional and demographic, suggetos people and leadership have lost the ability to recognise human value in real time. So, Happy World Airline Day to each end every person involved, directly or indirectly, in the airline industry. Wow, it's been a while since my last post here on LinkedIn! For those I haven't been in touch with, here's a quick update. I recently completed my six-month probation as a Ramp Agent with Southwest Airlines, transitioning from a sales background seeking a more laid-back job and pursuing a childhood dream of working in the airline industry. What I thought would involve just luggage stacking and waving orange wands turned out to be more complex, involving extensive safety measures operating ground service equipment and towing expensive aircrafts. Throughout my training, I learned valuable lessons like the importance of communication, leadership, time management, mutual respect, and adaptability on the ramp. From working as a Gate Lead to being a Transfer driver, gate assist, Local Driver, or Rover, every role brought new challenges and learnings. Key takeaways from my journey: - Great trainers and constructive criticism - Positive attitude - Punctuality - Inquisitiveness Excited about advancing my career to a role above the wing and aiming for a corporate office role in the future. Diana Ramos, a dedicated American Airlines flight attendant, tragically passed away under suspicious circumstances while on a layover in Philadelphia. Sadly, her body was only discovered two days later highlighting the importance of thorough wellness checks. We often romanticize the thrill of flying the friendly skies, but it's vital to remember that not every day in this profession is smooth sailing. While we enjoy a degree of autonomy in our roles, we remain a cohesive team. As employees of multi-million-dollar companies, it's imperative that we maintain a high level of vigilance and compassion, treating our frontline workers as valued individuals rather than mere numbers. Let's not allow complacency to infiltrate our roles. Instead, let's nurture a culture of care and empathy. Let's make a commitment to take care of ourselves and each other. And to our passengers, even when faced with delays, inconveniences, and uncertainties, I implore you to always choose kindness.
