GLBRC researchers Bruno Basso and Phil Robertson are featured in a first-of-its-kind report that charts a path for the United States to achieve a net-zero greenhouse gas economy by 2050. By growing perennial energy crops like switchgrass on marginal lands, U.S. farmers could remove millions of tons of heat-trapping gasses from the atmosphere and store them in the soil. In addition, farmers can improve soil fertility and restore #biodiversity to ecosystems by planting perennial crops. The report concludes that with current technologies, the nation could remove a billion metric tons of #CarbonDioxide per year by increasing the carbon uptake of forests and agricultural lands, converting waste biomass to fuels, and using purpose-built machines to remove carbon dioxide from the air. After the events of SF Climate Week and hearing so many inspiring ideas, I felt the need to take a break from reading about white papers under fluorescent lighting and do something physical in nature - like setting grapevines on fire! Huge thank you to Napachar founders Eric Mayer and Katy Mayer for allowing Adam Shurbaji MD and I to help them turn leftover biomass from vineyards in Napa and Sonoma Counties into #biochar. They helped us learn and understand the potential behind biochar, which according to Project Drawdown, could sequester billions of metric tons of carbon dioxide annually. Biochar replaces a polluting, commonplace activity - open burning - with pyrolysis, which generates energy from biomass in the absence of oxygen and little to no smoke. The leftover material can sequester carbon for thousands of years if buried in the soil, or in my case, my vegetable beds :) Being outdoors, getting your hands dirty, and connecting with nature is something we all could use more of - and this black gold acts as a wonderful fertilizer or compost additive! #Biochar #Agriculture #Sustainability #RegenerativeAgriculture #ClimateChange #SoilHealth #CarbonSequestration #RenewableEnergy #CircularEconomy #AgTech

Carbon Collect Direct Air Capture Integration with Algae Carbon Biocatalysis Carbon Collect is working with Arizona Center for Algae Technology and Innovation (AzCATI) on the integration of our passive direct air capture MechanicalTree™ in outdoor algae cultivation with improvements along the CO2 delivery train, including novel membrane gas-liquid interface solutions. Carbon supplementation is essential for achieving high productivity in microalgae cultivation. Currently, the selection of sites for large-scale algae cultivation in the US is constrained by the availability of waste CO2 sources or the proximity to CO2 pipeline infrastructure. This limitation restricts the development of algae cultivation facilities to specific locations. Integrating Carbon Collect's MechanicalTree™ direct air capture #DAC with algae cultivation offers a solution by removing the dependency on localized CO2 sources. This integration allows for the selection of cultivation sites based on optimal factors such as water availability, suitable climate, and land availability, without the need for nearby CO2 infrastructure.
