This picture was taken 7 years ago. I was running Memorial's Student Volunteer Bureau, and Jill Jubabir (my buddy Jim) was one of my incredible Volunteer Assistants. Since then, we've both graduated and moved on. Then last month, our jobs unexpectedly brought us back together for an afternoon — as part of a Youth Ventures NL event at Empower The Disability Resource Centre. It reminded me that, as you move through your career, you never know when and where people might pop back up again! That's why it's so important to be yourself. It's a hard enough thing to do in general, but it's often extra hard in career settings. Especially if you're worried about "being professional." But being professional isn't about being reserved or formal or controlling or cut-throat ambitious. Being a professional is ultimately about serving others well. When you find a way to do that while still being your authentic self — you go beyond just being a professional. You make actual connections. Which is why, when we saw each other last month, Jim and I shared a big hug and a set of big smiles. So if you're a student or just starting out in your career: 👉 Focus more on making meaningful connections than on how "professional" you seem. Your career is a marathon, not a sprint. Connections are how you go the whole distance.

Virtual Mentorship Leader | I empower professionals to help young adults avoid costly mistakes and earn passive income by sharing their experience and stories in the topics that schools never teach. | Info Session ⬇️
This is an amazing event where 6th-8th graders develop a city of the future. They have to consider all the different aspects of what makes a city functional, successful, and sustainable. Then they model it with a program similar to SimCity to prove it out and build a model of it using only stuff found around the house. Over the years, it has been truly remarkable seeing and hearing what young minds from all across the region come up with, before life tells them "That doesn't work." If you're able to help with the judging, I cannot recommend it more strongly!! #futurecities #mentors #mentoringmatters #STEM

Paid internships are foundational to providing career opportunities for young people who cannot afford to work for free. I love that this is focused on nonprofits and community organizations that don’t have resources for paid internships in their budgets. This is how we invest in the next generation of leaders. #PaidInternships #NonprofitLeadership #CommunityInvestment
Applications are now open to eligible non-profit and community-based organizations for Atlantic Union Bank's second annual Future Community Impact Makers Grant Program. 🎉 The application is presented by the bank's Community Impact Team, and more information can be found here: https://bit.ly/3NJ6z8S. Last year, the program provided 15 paid summer internship grants to organizations across our footprint. This year, we're doubling our impact by providing up to 30 grants worth $4,000 each! 👏 This program works to support pay equity within the community-based sector, while providing students with exposure to different career paths, opportunities for foundational skill development, and the ability to start building a professional network. Share with organizations you know, love and support. Member FDIC

Igniting Young Hearts: The Power of Summer Volunteerism Imagine this, a world where our students not only excel academically but also become compassionate, engaged citizens. It sounds like a dream, right? Well, it's not just a dream; it's the potential of summer volunteer opportunities. Summer break is often seen as a time for relaxation and rejuvenation, but it's also a golden chance to instill in our students the importance of giving back. By encouraging volunteerism, we're not just filling their schedules; we're nurturing their souls. Volunteering can spark empathy, build character, and create a sense of belonging. It's a powerful way to teach students the value of helping others while developing essential life skills like teamwork, communication, and problem-solving. So, let's make this summer count. Let's inspire our students to become agents of change, one act of kindness at a time. How can we empower our students to make a difference this summer through volunteerism? Transferable skills! Without a lot of boring details, I'm heading an outreach initiative for customers at work. Used past data to generate a list of leads. Intern is making calls and sending emails, has expressed some mild and understandable frustration when people just plain don't respond. I got to share the story of a fundraising campaign I headed at an old job. Industry standard for new and lapsed leads with a mailer is about a 2.5% response rate. There was cheering and champagne when I learned we got 2.8% that year. We're not looking for one kind stranger to save the day by dropping a wad of cash, we're looking to build new relationships with givers excited about the mission. The story was able to reframe the work with the understanding that trudging through nonresponses, to borrow a teacher's phrase, "is the work." Young fella has new language to understand how important what he's doing is. I'm still using skills from the nonprofit sector, and didn't realize this one was at play until I had to put words to it. Still and always grateful for JCU.

Director of the Office of Student Conduct & Conflict Resolution at Northeastern University | Doctoral Student | Trainer | Writer | TEDx Speaker
Some would ask why a Student Conduct office would do tabling for an involvement fair. 1st: we do have involvement opportunities like our student conduct board! 2nd: how can we try to be proactive and help students before violations or violence occur if we’re not willing to be visible and meet people?? I love connecting with students and sharing about how we can help rather than them having the connotation that were only around to “get them in trouble”. That’s why you’ll see me volunteering for events, advising a student group, or picking up an extra move-in shift. The more students get to see conduct professionals out and about in a positive space, the more the scales balance out. Plus who doesn’t want to get out of the office for a bit and get out in the sunshine!?
