Police extortion of any form should be considered a serious violation of human rights and a breach of Public Trust. This form of violation ought not to be treated with levity as it undermines the Rule of Law and promotes crime. A situation where the lawful enforcement agency saddled with the responsibility of protecting lives and property becomes a criminal syndicate, it, therefore means there is chaos.
Police extortion involves law enforcement officers using their authority to extort money or other benefits from citizens through intimidation, manipulation and coercion. However, the acts described above are beyond extortion. It should be considered as armed robbery. Officers found guilty should not only be dismissed by the Police Force but they should also be tried for the offence of Armed Robbery.
Every policeman on duty ought to be identifiable by his name and AP number. This position should be reinforced by the authorities and where police officers are found violating this code of conduct, they ought to be dealt with. Critical times require critical measures, the Police force must address this Menace.
