IT'S FINALLY HERE! During your hiring process, do you ever wish you could have reached your applicants at a young age to give them advice? Here's your chance! I am thrilled to share that Ethan Allen Workforce Solutions along with the City of Poughkeepsie and Poughkeepsie High School will be hosting a Trade Fair on April 11th. We know, we know, you get invited to job fairs all the time! How is this one different!? College isn't for everyone and we want to make sure that students and parents are informed about solid career paths, and what traits companies are looking for in their employees. If your organizations is interested in participating in the event, please let me know. Manufacturing, Warehousing, Plumbing, Electrical, Automotive, Construction and other similar companies are encouraged to attend. The event will kick off with a panel discussion where an employee from your organization can share their career path from high school student into trade professional. We encourage you to bring employees that reflect the backgrounds of the students. Women, minorities, LGBTQ individuals and those who "th!nk differently" are encouraged to share their successes with your organization. After the panel discussion we will have an hour of tabling where you can speak with parents and students. Bring along your products to allow them to touch the items, ask questions and submit resumes. This is a great way to give advice to the incoming workforce, network with other professionals and speak with parents who may potentially be looking for work as well. 'Picture yourself entering a grand ballroom at a hotel surrounded by well-dressed and earnest educators. Tables with signs listing school names and available job openings encircle you. You take a deep breath and review your list of potential schools. Then you begin “the dance” of meeting school leaders with the hope of snagging as many interviews as you can...' If you are new to international education, this scenario and the interviews that will hopefully follow it can be daunting. If you are a veteran international educator you are probably ready for this rodeo but perhaps it has been some time since your last recruiting fair. In both cases, we have a book for you to check out. After attending three job fairs in the past month looking for Worcester Bravehearts Baseball Interns, here are three pieces of advice I have for any student looking to get their first opportunity in #SportsBusiness 1. ALWAYS follow up. Out of the three career fairs that I went to, I would say that less than 5% of people I met followed up with me after the fair. Whether it is a simple "nice to meet you" or asking to learn more about the role, following up instantly puts you in the front of the line. 2. Know a little about the organization, and have your pitch ready before you walk up to a table. "So, what does your team do?" is not how you want to start the conversation. This doesn't mean you have to know the entire team's history, but having a little knowledge and a reason for your interest prior to walking to the table is a great way to start. The best conversation that I had with students were ones that started with a compliment on a promotion we ran, or the student pointing out how their skillset relates to something we do. A small customized pitch and a little research will put you way ahead of others. 3. If your school has a class on resume building, be cautious that other students may also have the same resume format as you. If you're in a big class and are getting taught to do a resume one way, there may be many others who are doing it the exact same way. Which means if you attend a school career fair, your resume may look the same as everyone else's. This isn't the worst thing in the world, but do just a little to customize your resume. Different color heading, bigger name size, a new category added, etc. 3B. On the topic of resumes- I don't think there is a right or wrong way to make a resume. Having multiple pages, putting your headshot on, using color as opposed to black and white are all things that I have heard are big no's from some hiring managers, but have also heard others encourage them. As long as your resume is clean, easy to read and has some substance behind it, you will be fine. The most important part of a resume is the experience that's on it! Those are my three pieces of advice I have. Any other Sports Business professionals have advice to add for students looking to break into the industry?

Have you ever felt lost in the crowd at a campus recruiting event? With so many companies competing to capture candidate attention, employers have to use a mix of tactics to increase attendance at their booth. If you want to improve booth attendance at events, take a look at: 👉 Your promotion strategy 👉 How you communicate with candidates 👉 How you work with student groups 📣 Promotion Strategy Leverage social media, email, and event listings to promote that your company is attending an event. Share fun facts, employee testimonials, internship opportunities, and application deadlines to generate interest in your roles and event presence. You can also offer to provide content or quotes for school publications and blogs to gain additional exposure. 📱 Candidate Communication Email students directly, highlighting open positions that match their major and customizing each message. This level of personalization in your candidate sourcing strategies makes students feel valued right from the initial outreach. You can also collect candidate’s phone numbers to send text reminders about your booth location, job openings, and follow ups after each event. 🤝 Partner with Student Groups Connect with academic clubs, fraternities/sororities, and diversity organizations to spread the word that you’ll be attending a career fair on their campus. Forming a partnership with student groups is also a great way to get in front of candidates outside of career fairs. What tactics have you used to increase booth attendance during campus events? Employers and recruiters - we have just opened up employer table registration for our next large-scale Vancouver Island University Career Fair, taking place on April 26, 2024! This event takes place two days after VIU exams end, when many students will be graduating or preparing to leave for summer break, and will be a great opportunity to promote any employment or internship opportunities with your organization to new graduates or students looking for summer work. Our previous career fair in September 2023 was a great success, drawing in over 650 VIU students and alumni from various programs during a 4-hour period. This event provided an excellent platform for over 60 different employers to connect with a diverse and talented pool of candidates. The fair not only offered meaningful networking opportunities but also received an employer satisfaction rating of 87%. In a post-event survey, 31 respondents (half of the employers that were in attendance) anticipated to hire 40-68+ students as a result of this event. To ensure that our department is able to continue organizing events of this magnitude, and to be able to continue providing the best level of career services that we can to VIU students and our employer partners, we will be charging $100/table for this upcoming career fair. In addition to being open to VIU students and alumni from all programs, I will also be opening this event up to members of the general public, and also inviting local high school students that will be graduating this year, to ensure that our employer partners have the opportunity to connect with as many potential candidates as possible, and that your organizations are more than satisfied with the success of this event. We only have 75 employer tables available for this 4-hour event, and I am anticipipating these spots to fill-up quickly (we have already two tables sell since email invites were sent 10 minutes ago), so please let me know if your organization is interested in participating and I will send you an Eventbrite link! (I am also organizing several other events in the next two months which will allow employers seeking to connect with specific student groups about internship and volunteer opportunities to do so - please let me know if you would be interested in any such event as well!)

Hey, employers! The Centennial High School JAG classes would like to invite you to their Spring Hiring Fair on May 9. This is a unique opportunity for local businesses/organizations to conduct open interviews with soon-to-be high school graduates interested in a variety of fields. This hiring fair is unlike most hiring fairs in that it is a REVERSE fair; the students are the ones on display for this fair! Each student will have a table make that best represents his/her desired career and educational aspirations. They will be showcasing what they are hoping to do and they types of jobs they are looking for. Employers can then walk around to talk to specific students who best fit the job/apprenticeship which they are looking to fill. The goal of this hiring fair is to have all students either be offered a job, apprenticeship, or enrollment into a specific post-secondary training program that gives them valuable experience in their desired career fields. Look into Campus Jobs    Many colleges provide hundreds of part-time job opportunities for undergraduate students who are looking to earn money during the semester. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, many career service professionals like me wondered if traditional career fairs were over for good. In fact, the National Association of Colleges & Employers posted an article in 2021 asking if career fairs would take on a new form in the coming years. Would they become virtual? Obsolete? While many recruiting methods do look different today than they did in years past, the value of an in-person recruitment opportunity remains strong. When I observe students and employers at Lipscomb Career Fairs, I see a rapport and connectivity that comes from shaking hands, making eye contact, and engaging in face-to-face conversation. The nonverbal communication that takes place can set one candidate apart from another and allow students to practice soft skills.
