Multi-disciplinary Executive, Board Director, Diversity & Inclusion champion, Psychotherapist, Keynote Speaker, Leadership Coach
Now that the Olympics is over, lets acknowledge the leadership of Australia’s Chef de Mission, Anna Meares. This leadership role is extremely broad and seems to sit somewhere between ‘dream job’ and ‘mission impossible’, often in the same day. Sharing in the glory of our athletic achievement is the easy part. Defending criticism of athletes, continually fronting the media about everything from water quality to team behaviour while trying to live up to the expectations of patriotic fans make parts of this important role thankless. It’s no surprise given her renowned attention to detail as champion cyclist that Anna was as prepared as anyone has ever been for this job. She’s put nearly 2 years of preparation in to perform at her best for 16 days. We’ll never know how much Anna had to deal with behind the scenes, but she’s led our Olympic team with passion, integrity and authenticity. That’s leadership at its finest. Once again, she’s made her country proud. Anna Meares OAM OLY Photo credit: Cairns Post
Bravo Anna Meares OAM OLY on a job well done.
She was an amazing Chef de Mission and hopefully will continue in her role for future Olympics. What an inspiration for many people in leadership. I still remember her iconic competitive rivalry with Pendleton after having to come back from a broken neck! Such mental fortitude. I highly recommend students read about Ms Meares. There was a documentary on Australian Story about her many years ago titled: "Know Thy Enemy."
Did a brilliant job. Unfortunately, her take on Raygun was poor.
Leading with grace, humility and integrity. I have loved every minute of these games!
Chris Lilley had better more skilful moves than Raygun. Raygun was apparently crying in 2008 over the patriarchy’s hold over the sport! Please. If she was the best breaker we have, it’s a good thing that it’s an Olympic sport no more. What an absurd statement! Sometimes leadership requires an acknowledgment of reality - to suggest that to criticise Raygun was misogynistic was such a cheap shot Anna. Our taxpayer dollars funded the Olympic effort. Having said that, it appears everything else went well in what was a successful Games for the Aussies!
A sensational example of leadership… committed, inspiring, resilient and also human, demonstrating both caring and vulnerable moments under pressure. An excellent choice for this important role. Go Team Australia!
Simply put , it was a brilliant decision by the NOC Australia to appoint Anna Meares. The success of Australian athletes at these games was in no small part due to Anna's remarkable understanding of the nature of competative sports, her exceptional ability to conceptualise goals, set targets and produce achievements, her extraordinary leadership qualities and ability to wrap up all her experience as a support package to each and every Aussie athlete that was trying their hardest to perform at their best and bring home glory for Australia ! Well Done-Mission Accomplished Anna 👏👏👏
It’s a great reminder we don’t always see everything on a leader’s plate (anyone’s for that matter) and to be conscious of all the behind the scenes thankless handling and maneuvering ✨
Awesome job Anna - your passion and drive for Australian Sport is inspiring. Your leadership and strength of character was evident to all Australians in Paris and back at home. The bigger the challenge the better you are 👊🏽
