Hi Folks,
I've been quiet on here recently, and I wanted to share a network update of where I'm at.
The TL;DR is I am actively back on the job hunt, and I'm looking to transition into the video game industry in a business operations role.
In July, you may recall I decided to leave Amazon after seven years supporting the company. Amazon has been a major component of my life. Not only did it stretch my imagination of what is possible for a company, but also what is possible for me as a person. It was a difficult decision, and it felt irresponsible and, frankly, privileged to leave without "the next steps" figured out while others were forced into the decision. But layered in my decision was the realization that I was burnt out, and I was chasing things that didn't really add the greatest value to my life.
I left asking myself, "What do you REALLY want to do?" It wasn't easy, at first, to answer. I let my mind get bogged down by what I had done and what I thought would create the "perfect through-line" in my career. Amid this contemplation, I found myself going to my safe place -- video games.
I will be honest with you that I've never truly given video games fair consideration for a career. Growing up, I faced constant consternation when I told adults I liked video games. They were labeled a "waste of time," "immoral," and "childish." As I aged, it only got worse when professionals didn't find it "serious," or if they liked them, talking about it was somehow also "not serious." But I couldn't disagree more, and I could write whole posts about the life lessons I learned playing Atari with my Great Grandmother, the OG Ms. Pac-Man.
So, I decided to dig deeper. Alongside my market research, I wanted to sharpen my technical skills to see what it's like for a dev to make a video game (spoiler: it's super challenging). Using free Unity courses, I completed the Junior Programmer learning path; I created a working prototype for my own game; and I put together a portfolio of the concept. While it's nothing incredible, and it might not lead to anything, working on it has ignited in me a deeper passion for video games and the people who love them.
So, there's my update. I'm actively pursuing a business operations role within the video game industry. I'm not naïve enough to think it will be easy, or it will even be my next job. However, I'm extremely encouraged by the community of gaming professionals I've encountered. I'd especially like to shoutout Amir Satvat & Jon Wolheim who hosted an amazing session for professionals recently impacted by layoffs. Thank you both for giving your time, prioritizing those folks impacted, and letting folks like me participate in the conversation!
I'll share more in the future. For now, thank you to everyone who has reached out and checked-in! It has meant the world to me.
