Traditional industry experience isn't the only key to success in film & entertainment.
Film school isn't a requirement. Neither is a MFA/MBA.
Which, BTW, can cost upwards of $100,000.
Sure it can be helpful in legitimizing your reputation, work, and opening doors. I don’t want to undermine that part.
But none of the above really moved the needle for me in the early stages of my film career.
What moved the needle:
- Fearlessness
- Obsession
- Self-Education
- Community
- Mentorship
- Execution
- Consistency
My first big opportunities with companies like World Surf League, Nike Los Angeles, and TOGETHXR came from defining my niche in the action sports space and creating my own body of work.
Then promoting that work on the internet.
I took advantage of the opportunity to get shown to millions of people at the touch of a button.
So my number one advice?
Find your niche and start creating.
Let's get after it!

𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗽𝗼𝗹𝘆: …𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗮 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗯𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗹𝗱?
There are only two board games that I wanted to keep since I was a child: Risiko and Monopoly.
However, Monopoly is definitely the one that entertained me the most because of its dynamics related not only to luck but also to a certain amount of strategic skills in planning one's 'positioning' and becoming the richest in the city of Monopoly.
More than 50 years later, Lavinia Capresi post made me rethink this game from a different perspective, one that, honestly, I never considered.
The game mechanism, for those who don't remember it, (...very few), is based on entrepreneurial initiative in the real estate market, with the goal of growing one's capital, possibly shaking the pockets of competitors, facing odds and contingencies. Sometimes even coming to troubles with the law and being forced to stay in jail (!).
Never has such an old game turned out to still be so relevant!
But beyond that, among the many merits of Monopoly game, it is the fact that you can find similarities, many I would say, with the dynamics which companies today have to move in their market environment.
Let me give you a few examples:
Probability & Unforeseen: doesn't this remind you the SWOT analysis with threats and opportunities in the market environment?
Money management: it's the simplified version of cash flow management… and when you're negative it'over!
Buying/Selling properties: it was nothing different from managing tangible assets, with investments and divestments
Jail: the stop during the game doesn't seem analogous to a regulatory problem that forces you to stay out of a market until you have received the certification of your product?
…and so on.
Amazing isn't it?
I had never thought about it until I read this post and the news related to the preparation of the next movie by the producers of the movie Barbie.
Thanks to Hasbro and Lavinia Capresi for taking me back in time and to this fun reflection.
What feelings does Monopoly remind you of?
How about using it in your companies today, perhaps for teambuilding activities or to create fun in a sales effectiveness training program?
What do you think about Monopoly?
🎲 🎲 A movie on Monopoly 🎲 🎲
Entering its 90th anniversary in 2025, Monopoly carries a full heritage of stories and bits of our culture, families and players experiences, incredible icons, powerful values and insights and potentially infinite storytelling, that I am just thrilled to see how all this richness will turn into the movie content that has just been announced, pushing the brand outside the box and into an exciting future. 🚀
Full spotlight on Monopoly! It’s going to be BIG!
For those out of work right now you have my sincere sympathy.
You are faced now with a new opportunity. There are tools out there now that were not there 5 years ago and an army of people that are frustrated and looking to empower themselves. With Unreal engine or any number of 2D programs you can make an amazing film or game of your own. There are now film festivals and ways to showcase your films like never before. There are ways to sell a game that can make a fortune.
Carve out a couple of hours each day to treat yourself to the freedom of your own ideas! Restore your spirit by showing what you are made of when you get to lead.
And if thousands of amazing content creators start competing against these big companies rather than working for them, they may find that it's more cost effective to keep them working for you than to lose sales competing against them. Let your creative flags fly!
The world wants to see fresh ideas.
The desire to pursue the wishes within our heart is a universal human experience!
As Disney’s newest film Wish showcases through its story: We all have dreams that we would like to achieve, and it’s one of the greatest parts about us.
But I’ve realized as I’ve gotten older how complicated a process that can be.
How do I choose what dream is most important to me?
Do I need to focus on one dream or pursue them all at once?
Would achieving my dreams actually make me happy?
One way I’ve been thinking about moving towards my dreams is by using the concept of “horizon goals.”
Instead of determining a specific dream and committing to only being happy when we get it, horizon goals are flexible arenas that we strive to pursue.
For me, as a lifelong enthusiast of Disney, movies and animation, my horizon goal is to have my career being involved in the film and entertainment industry.
While right now I’m a video creator on YouTube, I’m open to opportunities into the future that continue to move me towards that horizon goal.
Like two of my goals are to attend a Disney animated movie premiere and contribute to a movie so I can have my name in the credits!
Regardless of what dreams you have, I wish you the very best as you pursue them!
From Cartoons to Careers:
Dedication in the Age of Distraction
The technology age is such a blessing.
↳ Work from anywhere
↳ Learn anything,
↳ Entertained anytime.
But instant gratification has a downside.
↳ Ambition to try is not necessary.
↳ Effort and perseverance do not exist.
↳ Consistency and dedication are not prioritized.
Remember watching cartoons?
↳ Consistently memorizing the show/movie schedule
↳ Ambition to run to the restroom between commercial breaks.
↳ Dedicated siblings willing to give a play-by-play if you missed something.
↳ Efforts to find the lost remote or reach the buttons on the mounted TV.
Be as committed to your dreams as you were to Saturday cartoons!
↳ Be consistent and dedicated to working towards your goals.
↳ Put effort into learning and mastering a skill you're interested in.
↳ Leverage technology to promote a career you're entertained by.
Embrace the tech age and use it for your benefit.
Stay dedicated, consistent, and ambitious!
💬 What was your favorite show growing up?
💭 What's your take on balancing instant gratification with dedication?
Inside Out 2 did well at the Box Office.
So? Will the merch sell?
Solid answers I got from Licensing ProFriends (not tagging anyone because we are all afraid of The Mouse:)):
😁 No, Pixar IPs are inspirational but not aspirational
😫 Yes, because Kidualts are the new merch and collector target audience
🤩 No, sequels rarely sell. Especially if merch didn’t sell after the first one
😖 Yes, because the new Gen is so emo and constantly express their feelings
😜 Some will sell as “ironic merch” to Gen Z- mostly Anxity and Sadness tees/figurines
From a creative perspective, although it has all the right “ingredients” (music, colors, emotions, humor,co-watch, marketing power, etc.), it didn’t translate well to product the first time around.
One thing I’ll put my bottom dollar on is that merch sporting ‘group shots’ won’t sell.
Most licensees admitted there werent many pre-orders… but as I looked for cool designs/merch online today, I have to give it to BoxLunch for “understanding the assignment” 👏🏽
