Hello Friday. Simon Sinek says, “Leaders take the risk to trust first.” Within our organizations, trust isn't just a nice-to-have—it's the bedrock of high-performing teams. And so I whole-heartedly agree with Sinek’s sentiment: It is leaders who must take the first step to trust the people they’ve hired. Trust empowers team members to take risks, voice ideas, and collaborate freely, knowing they are supported every step of the way. Research consistently shows that environments where trust is prevalent see higher levels of commitment, lower turnover, and more creative problem-solving. These are the workplaces where people feel safe to express themselves, leading to richer interactions and more connected relationships. However, despite the clear benefits, trust in institutions is at an all-time low. As we’ve discussed here below, the reasons are multifaceted and rooted in economic, social, and political change and upheaval. Gen Z, in particular, enters the workforce with a healthy dose of skepticism, having grown up in a world where traditional institutions have often failed to protect and guide them through crises—from economic recessions to global pandemics to issues like gun control here in the U.S. This is not cause for discouragement; rather, it is an opportunity for leaders to step up and rebuild trust from the ground up within their own communities. Trusting first is inherently vulnerable. It requires us to lower our defenses, acknowledge our humanity, and extend our boundaries without guarantee. This vulnerability is a profound strength; it sets the stage for a culture where team members feel seen, heard, and valued for their expertise, point of view, and contribution. Leaders who embrace this mindset will not only foster high-performing teams, but also contribute to the broader mission of restoring trust in our institutions. So, as you reflect this Friday, ask yourself: How can you take the first step to trust more openly and fully? The journey may be challenging, but the rewards—for you, your team, and your organization—are immeasurable. #Leadership #Trust #Connection #Valued #HighPerformance #Teamwork
