For too long we've made #womenshealth synonymous with #reproductivehealth. But women are more than just vessels for childbirth! It cannot be stipulated enough. Just look at these statistics: 🧘♀️ Women spend 25% more of their lives in debilitating health than men, according to a report from the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the McKinsey Health Institute. 🧘♀️ The women's health gap includes a persistent data gap with women being under-diagnosed for certain conditions compared to men. 🧘♀️ “For millennia, medicine has functioned on the assumption that male bodies can represent humanity as a whole,” British feminist author, Criado Perez said. “As a result, we have a huge historical data gap when it comes to female bodies. Women are dying, and the medical world is complicit. This article is worth the time. Everything about this article sets the tone for what clinical research should aspire to in 2024, as achieved by Genentech and outlined within the article by Quita Beeler Highsmith, MBA. As a clinician, I have always believed our healthcare system does not have to be a monolith when it comes to health disparities and inequities, especially in the presence of science-bending feats that anyone willing (and clinically fit) should have access to and the opportunity to participate in should they choose. The data is very clear on the fact that when we engage diverse populations about clinical trials, enrollment rates are similar to non-diverse candidates. The data is also clear that diverse patients are not engaged at equal measure as their counterparts, often due to implicit, and sadly, in some cases, explicit bias. As such, it is incumbent that those working toward bridging the disparities gap observed in healthcare and trial research continue to keep our foot on the gas. Great strides are being made and will continue to do so with sustained effort and commitment.

💬 A word with... Dr Nicole Scholes-Robertson 🗨 “I love working with consumers, hearing their stories and learning about their amazing talents, skills, experiences and qualifications". Dr Nicole Scholes-Robertson is an early-career and consumer researcher who has conducted translational research on rural and remote health inequities in kidney disease. She has played an important role in progressing consumer involvement in nephrology research. About 10 years ago, she received a kidney from her little brother and her lived experience with kidney disease, receiving a transplant and dialysis, piqued her interest in consumer-led research. We are encouraged by the FDA’s updated draft guidance, as improving representation in clinical research is at the core of our work at GAP. We have been and continue to be dedicated to addressing the barriers that many face when accessing clinical trials, especially people who have been traditionally underrepresented. GAP’s Inclusive Research Initiative (GAP-IRI) is making a difference, proving that intentional efforts to be inclusive result in increased participation and this needs to be the new standard. Our inaugural study, Bio-Hermes-001, had an unprecedented 24% of participants from diverse communities. 🎉 Excited to have our clinical trial authorized to study—for the first time in Denmark!—the effect of using the drug #fisetin in treating patients with chronic diseases to lower inflammation and reduce the burden of senescent cells in the body.   🍓 Fisetin is a natural compound found in low concentrations in fruit and vegetables, such as strawberries, apples, and onions, which can selectively target senescent cells for elimination thereby lending a helping hand to the immune system in removing senescent cells. Preclinical studies suggest that this type of senolytic therapy could be effective against at least 40 different chronic diseases and geriatric syndromes, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and dementia.   💊 At the Department of Clinical Research, Amager and Hvidovre Hospital, we will examine the pharmacokinetics, safety, anti-inflammatory and senolytic effects of fisetin in healthy volunteers and in older patients with #multimorbidity (i.e., two or more chronic diseases present at the same time) and signs of chronic inflammation in a phase I and pilot phase IIa clinical trial.   🏥 Finding new ways to tackle chronic diseases is critical, as more than 50% of older adults suffer from multimorbidity. This number is expected to increase with the aging population, presenting an increasing challenge to the individual and to the society. #Inflammation and cellular #senescence are shared mechanisms of many different chronic disorders, accelerating aging and disease progression and increasing the risk of complications and ultimately mortality.   🤞 Targeting these underlying mechanisms rather than treating individual symptoms of manifest disease may be beneficial to a wide range of disorders at the same time.
