Political chaos in Europe continues to pose challenges for businesses. The CDU/CSU parliamentary group is pushing for the repeal of the Supply Chain Act in Germany, set to take effect in January 2023. Meanwhile, in France, the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the EPS ban is adding complexity for companies. These are only two of many examples that underscore the escalating legal ambiguity obstructing strides towards sustainability. How do you perceive these unfolding events? What implications could they hold for your business? #SupplyChainAct #Sustainability #LegalFramework

🌍 The Impact of Supply Chain Legislation on European Businesses 🌍 The recent implementation of Germany's Supply Chain Act sheds light on the challenges faced by companies like BAUCH, navigating complex supply chains across continents. With new legislation requiring due diligence on human rights and environmental standards, businesses are grappling with compliance burdens that threaten their global competitiveness. Similar concerns loom as the European Union prepares to enforce the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), aimed at promoting responsible corporate behavior. While supporters advocate for ethical sourcing and sustainability, critics warn of increased costs and bureaucratic hurdles hindering industrial growth. From German manufacturers like SMS group to logistics companies like Seifert Logistics GmbH, voices across industries echo concerns of competitive disadvantage and excessive regulation. Even smaller enterprises, like VIBRA MASCHINENFABRIK SCHULTHEIS, feel the indirect impact as larger companies cascade compliance requirements down the supply chain. As the debate over corporate responsibility unfolds, the need for balanced legislation that fosters sustainability without stifling business innovation becomes paramount. With insights from industry leaders and policymakers, we navigate the complex terrain of global supply chains and the evolving regulatory landscape. We recently presented The Antwerp Declaration, a crucial step in advocating for a European Industrial Deal that addresses pressing economic and environmental challenges. 1000+ organizations across Europe have now signed the declaration. This is a historic moment of unity among business leaders, associations, and trade unions representing diverse sectors. It also underscores the urgent need for collective action to tackle high energy prices, secure raw material supplies, foster innovation and promote sustainable products. The ten key points outlined in The Antwerp Declaration serve as a roadmap to guide us towards a resilient and competitive European industrial landscape, leveraging technology and the single market for sustainable growth. With such a strong coalition, we are calling on EU leaders to integrate these points into the new EU Strategic Agenda and policies, thereby embedding the Industrial Deal into the core of the European Commission's framework. The support garnered for this initiative is a testament to the commitment of European industries towards transformative change. Clarity, predictability and confidence in Europe's industrial policy are essential for driving innovation and sustainability across sectors. Let's continue our work for decarbonization and shaping a greener future for generations to come. #LetsDecarbonize #AntwerpDeclaration #IndustrialDeal

The CDU/CSU-Bundestagsfraktion proposed repealing the German Supply Chain Act (#LkSG). Similarly, Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, Robert Habeck, made a similar proposal, seemingly without prior coordination with the Green Party. While a suspension of the LkSG seems unlikely, but as far as we understand for the time being not out of the question. Removing reporting requirements seems more likely. Repealing the LkSG would severely impact companies dedicated to human rights and environmental protection. Under the pretext of "bureaucratic overload," there's an attempt to suspend a democratically passed law protecting human rights. This isn't in the "general interest of businesses", as it penalizes the efforts made to implement the law. The so-called "First Movers" – often medium-sized enterprises – are being disadvantaged. The EU #CSDDD is upcoming and requires preparation, and the LkSG serves this purpose for German companies. At atlat, we want to contribute to a #future-oriented and #responsible economy that integrates #sustainability, #humanrights, #transparency, and #profitable business.

This is the last week of the current European Parliament's term of office and MEPs are going to vote on many important measures for retailers. Most noteworthy is the Roza Thun Report on Late Payment. We expect the 30-60-120 deal to pass against a background of uncertainty and disagreement. But what happens after that is anyone's guess. At EDRA we will be urging the EU 27 governments to reject the proposal or at the very least, heavily amend it to resemble the status quo. We will also be preparing a new communication campaign for the next Parliament to explain the issues and dangerous consequences of 30 day terms. Another important dossier is the Wolters Report on Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence which mandates sustainability reports across ALL companies by 2026, including Scope 3, supply chain and consumer impacts. Increasingly we expect companies to put sustainability at the heart of corporate strategy, although many are already on that road. Our members will also have to look at new rules on CLP, Right of Repair and Ecodesign of products and we simply hope the next Parliament will be able to concentrate more on implementation and reviews, rather than another raft of new laws. Business needs space to breathe. https://lnkd.in/eQ3FM9wr
