Everyone likes to talk about what AI can do. Here's a great video breaking down exactly what AI can't do from a design perspective. A great example is asking AI to design a transformer that can actually transform. In the end, even with AI you need someone with design experience and taste to get it to all come together.

Can we please establish that there's a difference between a convincing digital likeness and a performance though? There may well come a time when AI can cross the Uncanny Valley in terms of visuals but I think it's a very different thing to suggest that they will be able to authentically convey an actor's interpretation of new material. The old phrase goes that 'You're only as good as your last performance'. Which actor is going to sign off on a performance that isn't intrinsically theirs? AI avatars will only cheapen an actor's brand. I'm a great proponent of AI within the TV & film industry but I think we need to look at AI as a tool in the armoury rather than a replacement of actors.

If you are into the field of narrow and multimodal AI tools, you already know that human voices can be easily cloned by some of them. It's undoubtedly a fascinating technology, but also threatening the voice actors incomes. On top of that voice clones can be easily abused in many criminal ways. ElevenLabs now tries to turn that around with their newest business model: clone your voice, get into the voice library and get paid for every time it is used. The voice owner sets the price level and manages how their voice is utilized.
