🎉 A Historic Moment: First Keyboard Change in 30 Years as Microsoft Introduces the "Copilot Key" for AI Integration in 2024! 🚀 #Microsoft has just revealed a revolutionary addition to the standard PC keyboard: the "Copilot Key." The keyboard layout you are using every day has not changed in 30 years - until today. Microsoft created a new standard PC keyboard layout with a "Copilot" key, a dedicated key to launch the AI-powered assistant Microsoft Copilot. What does this really mean? What simply happened is that the right control key is now the "Copilot" button. This is Microsoft's way of signaling that they are serious about AI for organizations and consumers enough to change a 30-year-old keyboard layout. Personally, I am waiting for the tech that entirely removes the need for a keyboard.

So... with Microsoft putting an AI key on keyboards that goes direct to Copilot, and with Windows having a 70% market share for desktops/laptops, I think we can see who the major player in AI is going to be for the next little while. At least in so far as the AI used for business/work functions.

Microsoft is pushing PC OEMs to add a Copilot button to computer keyboards. PC key standards/assignments (if not layouts) are relatively static things, so pushing for an AI-specific key is a big deal; at the very least it provides another proof point that Microsoft thinks AI is not just a buzzword, but that they truly expect it to transform personal computing and productivity. (As if Satya Nadella telling me this verbatim wasn't enough.) I actually think that integrating Copilot into Microsoft 365 productivity apps is going to be more impactful than an OS-level AI shortcut key, but there's no harm so (no sarcasm) I eagerly await custom Copilot keycaps for my mechanical keyboards.
