I started a new role at Dotdash Meredith in March: VP, AI Editorial Operations. I know what it sounds like. “AI editorial operations” gives big “robots taking writers’ jobs” energy. It’s not. I promise. I have been at DDM for more than 5 years, and the mission hasn’t changed: Give people helpful, trustworthy information. Doing that requires hard work—often manual, time-consuming work. I believe much of it will always be challenging, such as ensuring accuracy, making judgment calls on what’s most important to a story, and crafting the most engaging article, video, or social post. But there are a lot of things that don’t need to be difficult, or at least as tedious as they are right now, and that’s what I’m excited to solve. Generative AI is not magic dust to sprinkle on things to instantly improve them. It requires experimenting to apply thoughtfully and effectively, but once we do, it enables us to make things more efficient. (“Us” being the many curious, talented, and creative folks working on these initiatives at DDM.) Finding improvements means more resources to do the hard stuff. More opportunities to solve problems that previously seemed too big to tackle. It’s challenging, frustrating, and very rewarding. We’re committed to doing it right, and I’m encouraged by everything we’ve tried so far.
Can't think of anyone better to be in this role. Thank you for all you've taught me in my career at DDM. The company and your new team are so lucky to have you leading this initiative. Congrats!
What a cool new role! Congrats! I'm intrigued and look forward to hearing more about how Dotdash will innovate with and implement AI.
Congratulations and well deserved!

2moFirst - congratulations! When I was research editor at Playboy, I would tell editors that Wikipedia was not a source - you could use it to point you in the right direction, but you cannot rely on it. I view Generative AI the same way. It can be a great tool to help you get past roadblocks if used properly. And having people like you in positions like yours is exactly what we need as an industry to ensure that this new technology becomes a resource we can use - and not the other way around.
