Food, #Mentalhealth, and loneliness: Let's talk about it 👇 Earlier this month, a study revealed that the EAT-Lancet diet - which prioritizes consumption of whole grains, fruits, vegetables, nuts, and legumes - not only supports sustainability and climate goals but also reduces depression and anxiety. Another recent study found a link between #loneliness, cravings for high-calorie foods, and unhealthy eating behaviors. With one-quarter of the world experiencing loneliness, addressing these feelings could be key to breaking the vicious cycle of poor diet and mental health issues. Fixing food systems and our societies at large requires more than nutrition though, it’s also about holistic interventions that foster social connections. In The New York Times 'The Daily' podcast, Robert Putnam highlights how societal bonds have frayed and urges us to take steps to reconnect with each other on deeper levels. He advocates for things like joining local clubs, an exact point I also make in my book, "The Change-Makers Guide to Feeding the Planet." 🤩 I dedicate an entire chapter to 'Community' and how to nurture the 'magnificent, messy connections' humans are made for. I provide practical actions to build and contribute to local and global communities - this means proactively going outside of our professional and personal bubbles and cultivating conversations that will lead to better relationships and cooperative problem-solving. 💪 There's another section on the power of 'bridge-building' as a cornerstone of #multispectralthinking. We cannot revolutionize our food systems alone; collaboration, especially with those who think vastly differently than we do, is our competitive advantage. Yet, today's conflict-driven, isolating cultures makes cooperation seem like an uphill battle. How do we break through this? In the video here from a recent podcast with vegconomist - the vegan business magazine, I offer two examples of cultivating cooperation and bridge-building with others to carve out new possibilities: 🍛Jollof Face-Off: At Thought For Food's #GenerationFest, we invited chefs from Senegal, Ghana, and Nigeria to present their unique takes on Jollof rice. We served their culturally significant dishes with an unexpected twist: an #alternativeprotein from Impossible Foods. This sparked really cool conversations about the intersection of tradition and innovation in our future food systems, and was so much fun! 🐄 RESPECTfarms: This fascinating company is building bioreactors for #cultivatedmeat directly on farms, including farmers in the transition instead of excluding them. Takeaways: ✅ Food is critical for health, especially mental health. ✅ It’s also a key solution to combat loneliness. ✅We need to take actionable steps to build communities and bridges in our food systems. 🤓 Check comments for the study references above. 💚 For more insights, be sure to check out my book, "The Change-Makers Guide to Feeding the Planet".
