Bosch, the supplier of technology and services, agreed to acquire HVAC solutions business from Johnson Controls, a machinery industry company, and Hitachi, a Japanese multinational conglomerate, for $8bn. “As the biggest acquisition in Bosch history, this is an important milestone in the systematic implementation of our strategy for 2030. We are dynamically pushing ahead with the strong development of Bosch, and will achieve a globally leading position in the promising HVAC market with this acquisition. In taking this step, moreover, we will strengthen our presence in the US and Asia and achieve a better balance among our business sectors. This is also part of our strategy. In this way, we will open up further growth opportunities and put the company as a whole on a firmer footing,” Stefan Hartung, Robert Bosch chairman of the board of management. Alstom, a Theory of Constraints case study? Billions of euros have been wiped from the group’s market capitalisation in recent weeks. But with an order book of 87 billion euros, Alstom has made bulk purchases to avoid disruptions in its production chain. Did they order big batches to reduce costs at the expense of cash? The result is that the increase in stock is largely responsible for the hole in the available cash flow. The second factor is payment delays. These payment delays apparently account for a third of Alstom's current situation. Lastly, Alstom is facing a decrease in advances received for signed contracts. But where are the bottlenecks? If there is too much stock and a full order book, the bottlenecks are likely in Alstom's factories. Cash is also a constraint, for paying suppliers and having the right inventory in the right places. I bet the factories incriminate suppliers' shortages while the latter are not getting paid. Then, what are the fastest products to produce and deliver to maximize cash inflows? Will Alstom factories have to agree to discounts in exchange for shorter payment terms, to keep their heads above water? Or offer premiums to suppliers of critical components in exchange for payment schedules? The case continues, what is certain is that the need for cash can be reduced by shortening production lead times, through better synchronization of the production flows, and exploitation of the bottlenecks, directly on the shop floor. Procurement can be synchronised with the shopfloor needs, through diligent management and reduction of the inventory compared to the average daily usage (the coverage). They may have way too much inventory on one hand, and still shortages on the other hand though. Alstom has control over these operations. So let's be confident. A question remains, does the threat of layoffs risk aggravating the presence of internal bottlenecks, and therefore the ability to generate cash? In short, are they going to shoot themselves in the foot? It's unlikely. When facing a cash constraint and internal bottlenecks, the Theory of Constraints can help. The 39 'Strategic Suppliers' are companies deemed so critical to the smooth operation of the public sector that the Cabinet Office takes a hands-on approach to managing the government's relationship with them. A handful of suppliers earned just as much direct #publicsector revenue in FY22/23 as the Strategic Suppliers, but are not included in the official list. We refer to these suppliers as ‘Challengers’. 🤯 What a week for Advanced Services! Pushing the boundaries of their competitive landscape, Alstom and Aira have solidified the importance of outcome-based services in the manufacturing world. 🚨 Earlier this week, Aira announced that it would also be manufacturing its own heat pumps while starting as a service provider of comfort guarantees. Is this wise? Most probably, yes! A company that understands exactly what is required to deliver customer outcomes should know exactly what kind of product is needed. 🚨 Yesterday, Alstom announced that it would launch its own train service from Wrexham to London while being one of the world's leading train manufacturers. Is this wise? Why not! A company that has guaranteed the performance of its equipment for train service operators for decades should know how to run a train service best using its own equipment. 🤔 This creates a unique dilemma! Would Aira be competing with its current suppliers of heat pumps? Would Alstom be competing with its current customers? We don't exactly know. But most definitely, Alstom and Aira will offer the most advanced services in whichever competitive landscape they choose to operate in. 😎 Is this magic? No. Its #Servitization!
