Pioneer Mars Penetrator Mission (1974) The name "Pioneer" was applied to several different space missions and spacecraft designs. The first U.S. moon probes, launched by the Air Force in 1958-59, bore the name, as did a series of interplanetary "weather satellites" and the first spacecraft to brave the Asteroid Belt and fly past Jupiter and Saturn. The last Pioneers were Venus explorers, but if Hughes, makers of the Pioneer Venus spacecraft, had had their way, another pioneer would have explored Mars with six hard-landing penetrator probes. https://lnkd.in/gq4ZqYi9
