I have long said sailors are mariners and warfighters first and foremost. So naturally, I find a lot to like in the below from the US Navy Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. Clear, succinct and on point. Clarity of purpose and a clear-eyed vision of the threat is important. Of course, a conflict in the Indo-Pacific would be catastrophic and we must do all we can to prevent it where possible. But failing to prepare for it or acknowledge it simply undermines deterrence. If conflict is to arise in the Indo-Pacific it will be fought across all domains, military and non-military but geography dictates it will likely be very much maritime in nature. We must prepare our maritime warfighters for this potential, and we must do so now, and hope in doing so we bolster our deterrence strategy.

On this day in history, 19 December 1941, the US Naval Academy Class of 1942 graduates ahead of schedule. Their original graduation date of February 1942 was moved up due to the United States’ entry into WWII after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The US Naval Academy had been on a wartime schedule since the summer of 1940 in response to Germany’s attack on France. It also accelerated its courses to condense their material into a 3-year program, and began allowing 5 appointees for each Congress member instead of four. All of these changes contributed to the dramatic increase in the numbers of United States Navy servicemen over the course of WWII. Image of the US Naval Academy from the 1930s.
