Remarkably, even before American Indians became citizens of the United States in 1924, during World War I (July 28, 1914 – November 11, 1918), some 12,500 American Indians served in the armed forces. They fought for freedom when they weren’t even citizens of this country. Almost two-thirds of American Indians who served did so in the infantry, where they won widespread praise for bravery and achievement. Today, as we commemorate Memorial Day, I find myself reflecting on the extraordinary service and sacrifice of my father, a proud member of the 100th Infantry Battalion in World War II. My father and his comrades bravely fought from the toe of Italy all the way to occupied France. My father’s journey began in Hilo, Hawaii, where he was sent off to war by a community of patriotic Japanese Americans, including his family and friends. Despite facing prejudice and doubt, these courageous individuals stood united in their commitment to defend the freedoms and values of our great nation. In November 2011, my father was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, a testament to the extraordinary valor and dedication of the 100th Infantry Battalion. This honor is a powerful reminder of the profound impact these heroes had on our history and the enduring legacy they left behind. As I reflect on my father's service, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude. His story, and those of his fellow soldiers, teach us invaluable lessons about leadership, resilience, and sacrifice. They remind us that true leadership is not just about wielding authority but about serving others selflessly, standing firm in the face of adversity, and striving for a greater good. This Memorial Day, let us honor and remember all those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Their courage and dedication continue to inspire us. The US Military's mission is to defend and win wars. But recruiting has become increasingly complex, hindering our ability to achieve that goal. During our conversation, I found myself asking the same questions I would ask any fellow soldier: What regiment did you serve in? How rigorous was your physical training? What were the guiding principles that shaped your ethos? And perhaps most importantly, where and how did you face combat situations? Despite hailing from different corners of the world, our experiences echoed a familiar sentiment—the dedication, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to our duties as soldiers. It's this shared sense of purpose that unites us, regardless of our backgrounds or affiliations. The beauty of the military fraternity lies in its ability to foster connections that go beyond mere acquaintance. It's about understanding that while our uniforms may vary, our dedication to service remains unwavering. In a world often divided by differences, the brotherhood of the military serves as a powerful reminder of our common humanity. As I reflect on my interactions with soldiers from around the globe, I'm reminded of the words of General Colin Powell: "The ties that bind us are stronger than the occasional stresses that separate us."
