The rest is who you are." - Paul Annacone (famed tennis coach & personal coach of Roger Federer & Pete Sampras) How good are you in your average days? I recently relistened to an interview with Paul on the Finding Mastery Podcast. It was packed full of actionable content and insights from a coach who's led some of the greatest tennis plays of all time. And the above quote still resonates. There's truth in the fact that you will have a few days where everything goes your way. And others where absolutely nothing does. It's the space between those days, and the micro decisions you make along the way, that add up to a result of who you really are. These micro decisions are the difference between picking up the phone at 4:57pm and making another dial or logging off. It's the difference between pushing the last set of a workout or mailing it in because nobody is watching. How “good” you are on a normal day is the baseline you choose to set with the tiny decisions you make. Lean into the areas where you can be better. Work to raise the bar of what's defined as your "average." You don't have to be perfect every day. Nobody is. You just need to try.

When Billie Jean King was the number four player in the world, still in search of her first singles championship, she traveled to Australia to train full-time with coach, Mervyn Rose. Already near the top of her game, she would change everything. "The First thing Merv did was remake my serve by teaching me to shorten my backswing and toss the ball more forward, and higher... Merv also set out to retool my feeble excuse for a forehand. Merve wanted me to examine how I thought the game. He was a huge proponent of percentage tennis, which basically means hitting the shot that gives you the best chance to win the point with the least amount of risk." With all the changes, Bill Jean struggled. She double faulted 35 times in her ensuing mathces and dealt with loss after loss. Even fellow tennis player, Lesley Turner asked Billie, “Why are you changing so many things? Why? You’re already No. 4 in the world." “I hear you, I probably could stay top eight the rest of my career But I want to be No. 1. I came here to become No. 1.” One of my favorite Mottos comes from Howard Schultz, seek to renew yourself when you're hitting homeruns. Evolving yourself is easy when you're starting from the bottom or trying to change bad habits. But can you continue to develop when you're already at the top of the game. Champions don't settle.
