Local charities, The Junction Foundation and TEES VALLEY WILDLIFE TRUST , are celebrating after being awarded almost £470,000 in National Lottery funding to support their work with children, young people and their families to tackle climate change and connect with nature. The project will run in partnership with Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council’s Climate Change and Streetscene Teams. The charities will use the money to empower children, young people and communities to deliver projects to protect and restore natural environments in communities, to educate children, young people and families around climate change and to take part in social action to be part of the solution. The new funding from The The National Lottery Community Fund, will see the All Our Futures – Developing Communities project deliver the following; Improving access to natural spaces for families, providing education and reconnection to the natural world. Helping them to develop greater care for the environment, feel empowered, develop peer support networks and improve relationships and wellbeing. Beth Major CEO of The Junction, says: “We’re delighted, thanks to National Lottery players we will be able to build on the aspirations of local young people in tackling climate change and protecting nature. All children and young people involved will also have access to opportunities to take action, learn and access natural environments that they wouldn’t have without this funding. A conservation easement is a legally binding agreement where-in a landowner donates certain development rights associated with the land to a land trust. The donated property’s use is permanently limited to protect its conservation attributes and values, however, we work carefully with each client to find a fit that allows certain reserved rights, (i.e. building a homesite, agricultural use, hunting), while also protects the biodiversity and ecological features of the site. A New Milestone in Restoring the Atlantic Rainforest in the UK! We are excited to share the fantastic news from Pembrokeshire, Wales, where a 59-hectare area of lost Celtic rainforest is set to be restored to its ancient glory. This initiative marks a significant step in our 100-year Atlantic Rainforest Recovery Program, driven by The Wildlife Trusts and backed by a £38 million donation from Aviva. Key Highlights: - Pembrokeshire Restoration: The new project will see the planting of native species like oak, small-leaf lime, and wild service trees. This effort will create a rich habitat for mosses, liverworts, lichens, ferns, and diverse wildlife, reconnecting the area with its Celtic past. - Historical Significance: The restoration will weave around standing stones and an abandoned farmhouse, mimicking clearings created by prehistoric inhabitants. Achievements So Far: - Devon, England: A 30-hectare site near Totnes is transformed into a vibrant rainforest. Yesterday was my first time volunteering for Save The Bay ( https://savesfbay.org/ ). I helped out with pruning and weeding at their native plant nursery on the Oakland shoreline. Here I'm pruning some Grindelia Stricta aka gumplant ( https://lnkd.in/g6ZDYR7y ), a key species for healthy marshland. Save the Bay raises native species in nurseries and plants them as part of wetlands restoration projects. The San Francisco bay is estimated to have lost 90% of its original tidal marshland to construction, landfill, and salt-making operations. Save the Bay started 60 years ago to oppose infill for housing development, but its mission has evolved several times since then. Besides re-planting native plants, they clean up trash, remove invasive species, fight for policies, protect habitat, and restore dried-out salt ponds. I've wanted to volunteer with them for a long time but the timing never worked out until yesterday. Healthy marshland has a ton of benefits - it's a bird paradise (the SF bay is a major stop for migrating birds on the Pacific Flyway), it's where baby fish grow up, it cleans the water, it sequesters carbon (think about it - where does the carbon in coal come from? From peat, which comes from marshes!). And as the sea level rises, marsh can be a spongy buffer zone that protects the dry land behind it by absorbing storm surge. Marsh can even grow vertically to keep up with sea level rise, successive layers of plants piling upward to stay just above sea level. This is one of many cool facts I learned yesterday!
