Yesterday I spoke at the Biogas Expo about the potential to capture methane from slurry stores on farms. The bad news is that the world is currently under reporting methane emissions from slurry. It's probably about four times higher than reported in national inventories. The good news is that this biomethane can be captured and used as a replacement for diesel. What is it worth? Trials show that the value of biomethane captured on a typical dairy farm to be about £250 per cow per year. There are further cost savings on fertiliser inputs required because of the improved nutrient value of the residue left. Studies in Cornwall have shown that a small, 90 cow holding had a £47,000 improvement in Gross Margin. That is a game changer for dairy farmers.
Great to hear IFEAA Chair, George Eustice, presenting the keynote at Biogas Expo session on fugitive emissions.
