Career pathways in Social Housing. Making a difference to the community while building yourself a dynamic career! Here’s a brief overview of a career path: Starting Out: You are likely to start out in an entry-level post such as a Tenancy Support Officer, Housing Assistant, Customer Service Adviser, or Housing Administrator. These roles provide a solid foundation in understanding the housing sector. Gaining Experience: As you gain experience within the role, you will be able to advance to become a Housing Officer, Senior Housing Officer or Team Leader, based on experience and training. This involves taking on more responsibilities and managing larger portfolios of properties dealing directly with tenants and local community. Specialization: You could then specialize in an area of housing, Homelessness or Anti-Social Behaviour. Specialization allows you to focus on specific issues within the housing sector, providing targeted support to those who need it most. Management Roles: Progress into management roles, such as a Housing Manager or Director of Housing Services. These roles involve strategic planning, overseeing housing policies, and managing teams. Remember, every career path is unique - this is just a general guide. I am currently recruiting a variety of roles in Social Housing. This is how job ads should be, especially in property management—clear, transparent, and straightforward. Providing all the details upfront helps applicants make better decisions and speeds up the hiring process. I recall encountering a job description that encouraged all applicants to read their employee handbook. I was genuinely impressed. Getting a glimpse into the company's culture before applying made it much more appealing because of their openness. My job search has been challenging, to say the least, but the roles that prioritize honesty and transparency are the ones I find most rewarding to pursue. Remember, transparency is key! It's what makes your company more attractive.

ACCOUNTABILITY IN MULTIFAMILY STAFFING Taking accountability is important for both the community manager and the staffing agency when attempting to staff an apartment complex because it ensures that both parties take ownership of their roles and responsibilities. This accountability helps in maintaining clear communication, meeting agreed-upon deadlines, resolving issues efficiently, fostering trust between the parties, and ultimately working together effectively towards the common goal of staffing the apartment complex with qualified individuals. It leads to a more organized and successful staffing process, benefiting the overall operations and reputation of the complex. At AJ Employment Services we are all about owning up to our actions and pushing for growth. Let's ditch the blame game and focus on finding solutions instead. To run a tight ship, we need to chat openly with our clients/community managers, brainstorm fixes together, and keep an eye on what everyone is doing. It's all about teamwork and fostering a positive work vibe! #OwnUp #TakeResponsibility #AccountabilityMatters #GrowthMindset #NoExcuses #PositiveWorkCulture #DreamBig #InspireOthers #BelieveInYourself #YouCanDoIt #MakeItHappen #NeverGiveUp #PropertyManagement #RealEstate #InvestmentProperty #RentalProperty #PropertyManager #LandlordLife #TenantRelations #MaintenanceManagement #LeasingStrategies #Staffing #Recruitment #HR #TalentAcquisition #Hiring #JobSearch #HumanResources #CareerOpportunities #EmploymentAgency #AJEmploymentServices #Marketing

"What more do city councils want in a city manager?" Don Menzel asks this question in this opinion piece... Beyond the education and experience, a successful manager needs to acquire a host of other hard and soft skills. Menzel writes that: "His/her personality must align with the council’s dispositions and outlook. A successful applicant must convey a pleasant disposition, leadership confidence, and a management style that fits the local government workforce. He/she must know how to delegate responsibility and ensure accountability." "Other qualities necessary to become a successful city manager include the ability to maintain a sense of humor and a tough skin to deal with criticism and sometimes, attacks on his/her management ability." ---- As Don articulates in this piece, being a successful manager is difficult. You can be extremely smart and talented -- but fail miserably. And I would argue that quite a few managers who aren't that smart or talented perform well because they are highly skilled at fostering and maintaining strong relationships with their electeds. h/t to Michael Halpern for sending this editorial to me. ---- Have you checked out my new YouTube channel? Today's question is from a city clerk who would like to become a city manager. Here is their question -- what advice do you have? ----- Dear Joe: I wanted to pick your brain on what a city clerk with over 15 years of experience would need to do in order to transition into a more Director level role. I say "more" as many cities see the city clerk as simply a manager and not a director or even a separate department. There doesn't seem to be a lot of vertical movement depending on the city and/or city manager. I would like to know what it would take for a city clerk to move up. Either to become and be recognized as a department director, move into an ACM/DCM role, and eventually the city manager role. What might make a city clerk stand out in their attempt to move up? ----- The deadline to sign up and become a founding member of the American Association of Municipal Executives is July 15th. Founders lock in special discounts and rates, will have priority or exclusive access to events and offerings, and receive other perks that will not be offered to regular members after the deadline.
