I just finished watching a fascinating discussion between two prominent figures in the design world, James Martin and James Victore. They posted it online, and I'm confident you can find it. The conversation delves into the realms of graphic design and art, specifically exploring the age-old debate about whether art and design are distinct entities or if they share common ground. The discussion initially revolves around the dichotomy of art versus design, often viewed as two separate camps with artists on one side and designers on the other. However, I believe that something crucial gets lost in this dichotomy. In reality, art and design are essentially the same; they both leverage the same tools. In graphic design, we work with elements such as point, line, shape, form, and color. These elements are equally indispensable in art creation. Furthermore, both disciplines adhere to shared design principles, including contrast, balance, emphasis, proportion, hierarchy, repetition, rhythm, pattern, white space, movement, variety, and unity. All these factors play integral roles in the creation of both art and design. The pivotal distinction lies in the realm of intent—the purpose behind a piece and the artist's or designer's intention when creating it. This, I believe, is what separates art from design. Consider the example of artists like Ed Ruscha, who incorporates typography into visual works. While he might be categorized as a graphic designer due to the presence of type in his images, the classification may not be that straightforward. Similarly, graphic designer Milton Glaser produces magnificent works of art through his designs, illustrations, or covers. I am eager to address the often-overlooked aspect of intent in this discussion. The argument of whether art is design or vice versa has, in my opinion, been resolved, particularly by the pop art movement. It all boils down to the intention behind the piece. Can a cookie jar serve its functional purpose and simultaneously be considered a work of art? The answer lies in the intention; if it was crafted with the intent of being a work of art, then it indeed is one. So, there, I thought I should clear this up. Carry on with your day. Since graphic design has a significant role in blending many media and communicating with the audience, it is considered a form of art. Functionality comes first in graphic design, with the goal of effectively communicating ideas through typography, layout, and color theory. Traditional art, on the other hand, frequently places less emphasis on practicality and more emphasis on personal expression and passion. As I mentioned earlier, I have loved painting with watercolors since middle school, but for work-related reasons, I had to switch to graphic design in the current day. They are clearly the same, yet in an uniquely different way. The lines separating the two, however, can become hazy, particularly in modern art when designers and artists alike are experimenting with abstract ideas. The focus graphic design places on achieving useful goals, such as branding or advertising, is what makes it unique. Nevertheless, graphic design and art both possess the power to arouse feelings, provoke thought, and push the frontiers of creativity, allowing you to express your thoughts and favorite comic books, movies, or songs.

This week's #Fridaysfeaturedcreative takes us on a quick journey into history. The origins of Labor Day are traced back to the labor movement of the late 19th century. It's a celebration of the hard work and dedication of the workers that paved the way for better working conditions and labor rights we enjoy today. As we move forward in time we encounter new jobs like typesetters, compositors, artists and illustrators. These founders of graphic design had different constrictions on their design capabilities, and it clearly has an impact on their outputs. Today, we are in the realm of computer-generated creative that offer precision and flexibility in color, typography, and imagery. We are focusing on user experiences and optimizations. While in the late 1950s and early 1960s – an era of what we now call Mid-Century Modern design and Vintage Americana aesthetics – creatives needed to focus on what they had access to. That is how you get this recognizable style of campaign posters. It has a captivating blend of bold colors, minimalistic typography, and a human touch, that is all hand-drawn. Graphic designers make commercial designs, so they fall into the category of design, not art, by common definition. I'm a graphic designer and I am working with children in visual arts as well.
