To mark Women’s History Month this year, I want to honor and thank women working in all fields that have traditionally employed more men, especially the financial services profession. According to the latest US Census Bureau data, women make up just over 50% of the population; yet less than a third (31%) of financial advisors are women. What can we do to help the women who want to join, stay, and succeed in this profession? That’s a question I’m answering in my latest blog. I absolutely agree about the need to continue the research, to continue to understand #lifelong experiences. This came out in my #research with #motherscholars as well, while most of the literature focuses on those with young children, older women often still caretaker as grandmothers, while also frequently caring for their aging parents. #ResearchMatters #EquityandInclusion #HigherEducation #TransformationalLeadership #LifelongLearning

According to the 2011 census, there are approximately 73 million single women in the country, which includes widows, separated, divorced, deserted, and unmarried women. These single women face pervasive biases and discrimination across various spheres of life, including their own homes, communities and governmental policies. Despite some localised efforts, the majority of single women across the country still remain unrecognised and invisible. Their voices go unheard and their specific needs remain unaddressed within broader governmental policies and programmes. Sharing the “Single Women’s Agenda for Just Futures” document, which highlights the essential steps towards the recognition of single women, their economic empowerment, social security, eradicating different forms of discrimination, and ensuring their safety and dignity. Dawson My continuing chronicle of interviewing women has produced some extraordinary points of view, opinions, feelings, and ideas about the financial well being of women. Delaware Commission for Women Hall of Fame Inductee Beverly Stewart, President of Back to Basics says “more than ever before, women are not only the bread winners, but are the decision makers; consumers and buyers. They command more respect and are very capable people.” She goes on to say “they do need help with the planning piece and looking at the long term.” Lani Nelson-Zlupko, PhD of LNZ Consulting who is a therapist, coach and consultant says “A husband is NOT a plan! Women need exit cash and walking shoes to maintain their independence.” At age 65, women can expect to live, on average, an additional 20 years.* The U.S. Census Bureau indicates that women own almost 30% of nonfarm businesses. Small Business : 21.4% of businesses are owned by women According to the Census Bureau’s 2021 Annual Business Survey, about 21.4% of all employer businesses in 2020 were owned by women. The over 1.2 million women-owned businesses employed nearly 11 million people .
