Hays County ranked first in year-over-year employment growth in December at 5.0%, according to new data published today for the 360 largest US counties. December employment data for the Wilmington metro shows that it is down 400 jobs relative to the same month last year. Interestingly the weakness seems to have spread beyond Leisure/Hospitality and Professional and Business Services. There is, however, still considerable strength in Healthcare, Manufacturing amongst others. The drop in Leisure and Hospitality jobs coupled in the growth in higher paying jobs in Healthcare and Manufacturing partially explains the big jump in average wages and shows the changing dynamics and ongoing diversification of the area. Relative to December 2019, the area still has about 9,000 more jobs. #slowdown #economy #growth #wilmington #uncw #diversification #capefear

The St. Louis MSA job market performed comparatively well during COVID. While St. Louis payroll employment was about 2% higher in 2023 than in 2019, several peer metro areas still have not returned to their 2019 employment levels. These MSAs include Baltimore, Cleveland, Detroit, Milwaukee, Minneapolis and Pittsburgh. A close peer group of midsized Midwest MSAs, excluding those that host state government and/or large state universities (Baltimore, Columbus, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, Nashville) consists of Cincinnati, Cleveland, Detroit, Kansas City, Milwaukee, Pittsburgh and St. Louis. The St. Louis job market outperformed all of those MSAs except Kansas City and Cincinnati during COVID as well as over the longer 1990-2023 period. Did you know that 94% of all people working at housing authorities ended up working at a housing authority completely on accident? They were just looking for a job and the housing authority was #hiring. Did you know I made that stat up? But honestly I'm 96% certain it's accurate. I have literally only met 1 person in our entire industry who actually wanted to work on this business when they were a kid. But here's the crazy thing about that fact. The jobs that exist at housing authorities are actually really freaking good jobs. The benefits are usually great, the pay isn't wall street good, but you'll be able to super size your McDonald's meal. And here's my favorite part about it... You get paid to help people. The work you do everyday actually helps people. And there's a job in every imaginable discipline... accounting, development, IT, real estate management, communications, all of it. I guess what I'm getting at is this, if your jump shot isn't gonna get you a contract with the Lakers, and your singing voice won't put you on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, or you have a face that truly belongs on radio, maybe you should come work at your local housing authority.
