Beginning the very first year of my career in the seed industry, I was granted the opportunity to trial and compare different varieties. My backyard had about 1/2 dozen Kentucky bluegrass varieties. It's where I actually learned first-hand terms like "spring greenup". Thus began a fascination with the amazing unique life of plants. Over the past decade, roots have simply geeked me out. They are just amazing. Well, how to you learn about something underground without digging it up and destroying it? BUCKETS! Whether or not it is an official term, when I say "bucket-study", I mean something where a plant is grown in a portable above-ground container for the main purpose of looking at the plant as a whole - from top to bottom. This past winter, we looked at seven different legumes using cloth "buckets" that were 18" deep by 6" wide. Also, as part of the study, I planted a number of individual seeds in 2" trays, and then transferred some into clear plastic cups. The primary "garden" was the cloth buckets. By planting enough seeds, I could harvest them - shoots and roots - at various intervals, measure and take photos, and let the others continue to grow. Now that we have the video data, we are combining them into various videos. We have two sets of them on Marco Polo white clover. And with the help of AI, we even have a nice voice-over. We even captured new root growth off of stolons. Check it at either of these links: https://lnkd.in/efi_7v-8 and https://lnkd.in/eQMGdyrr

“The results of this current survey show that a majority (52%) of breeders report PBRs offer an important incentive for investment. Without these incentives for investments in new crop and plant varieties would be likely be less and, all other things being equal, there would be fewer new varieties commercialized. With fewer new varieties entering the market, farmers would be forced to rely for longer on older crop varieties that lack higher yielding capabilities.” #PBRs #breeding #plantbreeding #innovation #agriculture

Today is International Carrot Day, a chance to celebrate our favourite orange vegetable. To help you celebrate here are a few fun facts about carrots from the British Carrot Association: · We Brits eat our way through £290 million or 700,000 tonnes worth of carrots every year – that’s approximately 100 carrots per person. · Each year 22 billion seeds are planted in Britain, producing around 100 carrots per year for every member of the population. · The total area in Britain planted with carrots each year is 9000ha – double the size of Holland’s carrot production area. That’s 2000 times bigger than the roof area of the new Wembley Stadium or the equivalent of 18,000 football pitches. · The World’s Longest Carrot was grown by Joe Atheron from Mansfield Woodhouse, Nottinghamshire in 2007. The carrot was measured in at 5.84 metres, over 19 foot long. · The World’s Heaviest Carrot was grown by Peter Glazebrook from Newark, Nottinghamshire in 2014 and weighed 20 pounds (9.07 kg). · If you laid all the carrots grown in this country in one year end to end they would reach 2.3 million kilometres – that’s two and a half return trips to the moon. If you're a carrot farmer and need specialist nutrient formulations to boost growth, give Grotech Production a call. We could develop one just for you.
