Rest in peace, Kristy. There is no field quite like policing. The higher occurrence of suicides in the field should be met with programs and professionals who understand what officers are going through. Many times the best professionals for that task are other police officers. Departments should strive to have psychological services and an holistic approach to officers’ mental well-being, and show officers that they care about their mental health. Any police department that ignores this important aspect of employee care is doing a disservice to their officers and the public that they serve.
Condolences, thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues of Austin Police Department (TX) Senior Police Officer Kristy Astran #4729 who took her own life yesterday. If you are struggling and see no way out...... REACH OUT to someone. There is always someone who will listen and be willing to help you get the help you need. COPLINE: 1-800-COPLINE 1-800-267-5463

“5518 Checking Code 4……..” The most heartbreaking 66 seconds you’ll hear today, or maybe ever. Algona, IA Police Officer Kevin Cram’s EOW call. The anguish in the voice of the dispatcher, understandably unable to keep her emotions at bay. #LODD #EOW #EnoughIsEnough https://lnkd.in/gg7dDnfz

📢 'The Criminal Justice Alliance were right the first time; section 60 does more harm than good' - StopWatch A joint investigation by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services (HMICFRS), the College of Policing, and the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) was published today, looking into a super-complaint raised by the Criminal Justice Alliance (CJA) calling attention to the harms caused by suspicionless stop and search powers and the inadequate scrutiny of these powers. Read StopWatch's full response to the report here: https://lnkd.in/eCMs6QcD StopWatch: 'The simple fact is that section 60 is a redundant power with no purpose beyond being a tool of social control of communities deemed as violent and criminal, and even then it almost never works. The CJA were right the first time; section 60 does more harm than good, and therefore should be scrapped.'
Following our joint investigation of the use of section 60 stop and search, our new report makes ten recommendations. These are to help ensure forces use the power effectively, only when necessary and evaluate its use.
