On June 19th, our doors will be closed in observance of Juneteenth, a day that holds profound historical significance. Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the moment on June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the end of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery. This announcement came more than two years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, highlighting the enduring struggle for freedom and justice. Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength of African Americans in the face of oppression. It is a day to celebrate the hard-won freedom of the past, reflect on the ongoing journey towards equality, and recognize the contributions and achievements of African Americans throughout history. Happy Freedom Day!! 🙌🏽 Americans celebrate June 19th as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorating the date in 1865 when the abolition of slavery was announced in Texas — more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation and two months after the end of the Civil War. There are a few things I like to remember about this now Federally-recognized Holiday: - that our ancestors were further denied and delayed their human rights as free people due to their lack of information and the systems in place to keep them misinformed - that I was not taught about this historically significant and relevant event in my American History classes growing up due to my lack of information and the systems in place lack of reviewing skewed historical perspectives and objectives - that we as a society have come so far in recognition of the marginalized, in terms of equality - that we as a society have so far yet to go in terms of EQUITY Happy Juneteenth! Today is a day that is often omitted from history books - Juneteenth. Nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation, General Gordon Granger and the Union soldiers announced slaves were now free in Galveston, Texas. For people to get an accurate picture of today’s racial tensions, we must be able to look back at our history and understand our past to forge a better future. One book that I highly recommend is "Caste" by Isabel Wilkerson. This book was eye-opening and is a must-read to understand the inequities in our society, the history behind them, and the ongoing pervasiveness of these inequities. A horrifying detail that stuck out to me was that the Nazis based their treatment of Jews on how African Americans were treated in the United States. How do we as a society work to improve this? Wilkerson put it best: “Radical empathy, on the other hand, means putting in the work to educate oneself and to listen with a humble heart to understand another's experience from their perspective, not as we imagine we would feel. Radical empathy is not about you and what you think you would do in a situation you have never been in and perhaps never will. It is the kindred connection from a place of deep knowing that opens your spirit to the pain of another as they perceive it.” It is about realizing that as a nation, we have treated certain groups of individuals horribly and it is well past time to make it right. #Juneteenth #empathy #equity #equality #bookrecommendation

Some Truth About Juneteenth Many perceive the time between the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and Juneteenth as the gap between legal freedom and actual emancipation. However, it’s more accurate to consider the period from the surrender of the Confederacy on April 9, 1865, to June 19, 1865, when Union troops spread the news of freedom. This delay highlights that many slave owners, despite knowing the Confederacy had surrendered, kept this crucial information from those they enslaved for months.   Moreover, the Emancipation Proclamation only applied to Confederate states. Lincoln did not free slaves in Maryland, Delaware, Missouri, Kentucky, and West Virginia, Union states where he actually had the authority to do so. While Maryland, West Virginia, and Missouri ended slavery in early 1865, Delaware and Kentucky did not abolish slavery until well after Juneteenth. Laura Smalley’s story and voice are testaments to the resilience and enduring spirit of those who yearned for freedom. Juneteenth stands as a powerful reminder of delayed justice and the long journey toward true emancipation. It calls us to reflect on our history, recognize the systemic roots of oppression, and commit to the ongoing fight for equity and inclusion.   As we honor Juneteenth, let us acknowledge both the progress made and the work that remains. We’re closed today to celebrate Juneteenth, learn more about the holiday, and educate ourselves further on the history of slavery and racism in the United States. The Emancipation Proclamation was signed on January 1st, 1863. So why do we celebrate Emancipation Day on June 19th? On the eve of January 1st, 1863, known as "Freedom's Eve," the first Watch Night services occurred. During this night, African Americans, both enslaved and free, gathered in churches and homes across the country, anxiously awaiting news of the Emancipation Proclamation's enforcement. Similar Watch Night services continue to this day and are held by people of diverse races and religions to observe various special occasions. At the stroke of midnight, their prayers were answered, and all enslaved individuals in the Confederate States were legally declared free. Union soldiers, including many Black soldiers, marched through plantations and cities in the South, reading copies of the Emancipation Proclamation to spread the word of freedom. However, immediate freedom was not granted to everyone in Confederate territory. While the Emancipation Proclamation was enacted in 1863, its implementation was not possible in areas still under Confederate control. This meant that enslaved people in the westernmost Confederate state, Texas, remained in bondage for a longer period. It was on June 19th, 1865, that this changed. On that day, enslaved African Americans in Galveston Bay, Texas, received notification from 2,000 Union troops that they, along with more than 250,000 other enslaved Black individuals in the state, were granted freedom through an executive decree!
